U.S. slaps steep tariffs on imported washers, solar panels

WASHINGTON/LOS ANGELES, Jan 22 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump slapped steep tariffs on imported washing machines and solar panels on Monday, marking his first moves to erect trade restrictions under seldom-used trade laws that allow unilateral actions. The decisions in the two "Section 201" safeguard cases followed findings by the U.S. International Trade Commission that both imported products "are a substantial cause of serious injury to domestic manufacturers," U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said in a statement.

U.S. commission recommends tariffs to curb Samsung, LG washer imports

WASHINGTON/SEOUL (Reuters) - The U.S. International Trade Commission on Tuesday recommended tariffs to keep Samsung and LG from flooding the U.S. market with inexpensive washers, a step that would protect American appliance giant Whirlpool Corp (WHR.N). U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to make a decision on the recommendation by early next year. The ITC found last month that surging imports harmed domestic producers, although it did not find that washers made specifically in South Korea, already subject to anti-dumping duties, were responsible.

U.S. commission recommends tariffs to curb Samsung, LG washer imports

The U.S. International Trade Commission on Tuesday recommended tariffs to keep Samsung and LG from flooding the U.S. market with inexpensive washers, a step that would protect American appliance giant Whirlpool Corp. The ITC said a graduated tariff rate should be placed on imports of large residential washing machines above a 1.2 million-unit threshold in each of the next three years, with the rate starting at 50 percent the first year and sliding down to 40 percent by the third year. The panel was split on whether tariffs should be imposed if fewer than 1.2 million units were imported in any given year.

At a hearing in a "global safeguard" trade case that could lead to U.S. President Donald Trump imposing steep import restrictions, lawyers for the U.S. producers accused the South Korean companies of being "country hoppers" that have moved output several times to avoid prior anti-dumping duties.
