HTC Exodus: Is cryptocurrency and blockchain technology the future of smartphones or just a marketing stunt?

Smartphone innovation may have stuttered to a halt in recent years, but HTC has a plan to reinvent the ubiquitous device while also reshaping the entire internet while it’s at it. The Taiwanese firm revealed its vision for the future of smartphones at the Consensus 2018 cryptocurrency conference in New York, explaining how it will utilise blockchain technology to support cryptocurrencies like bitcoin and ethereum. “Our vision is to expand the blockchain ecosystem by creating the world’s first phone dedicated to decentralized applications and security,” HTC states on a website dedicated to the new device.

HTC's June sales slump 68 percent, biggest drop in over two years

Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC Corp said its sales fell nearly 68 percent in June, its biggest slump in more than two years, as the struggling firm continues to lose customers amid intensifying competition with nimbler manufacturing rivals. Once a favorite with consumers and investors, HTC's popularity has dwindled with the emergence of rivals such as Apple, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, and more recently China's Xiaomi Corp. HTC said its June sales fell to T$2.2 billion ($72 million), from T$6.9 billion a year ago and T$2.45 billion in May.

Struggling smartphone maker HTC to slash 1,500 jobs in Taiwan

Smartphone maker HTC plans to slash around a quarter of its global workforce through job cuts at its manufacturing unit in Taiwan, in a bid to better manage resources as the company continues to battle dwindling sales. The job cuts indicate fresh hiccups for the struggling Taiwanese mobile phone maker that once sold one in 10 smartphones globally, but has seen its market share decline amid mounting competition from Apple, Samsung Electronics Co and Chinese rivals. HTC said it would cut 1,500 jobs in its manufacturing unit in Taiwan.

HTC U12 Plus Hands-on: An eye-catching smartphone without an eye-watering price tag

Well, plenty of new stuff, actually, even if at first glance the HTC U12+ does look like many of the other handsets on the market right now, though there’s no notch here, which will please many. HTC, like Nokia, has always had an exceptional eye for colour and that’s the first thing you notice here. HTC calls this Liquid Surface design and it’s very eye-catching.

Taiwan's HTC shares jump more than 7 pct on upbeat outlook

Shares of Taiwan's HTC Corp jumped more than 7 percent on Tuesday after the mobile phone maker said it expects a financial boost from a deal sealed with Alphabet Inc's Google earlier this year. HTC on Monday reported a net loss of T$9.8 billion ($337.3 million) in the fourth quarter, its biggest on record, due in part to competition and inventory write-downs, but said it was upbeat going forward due to the Google deal. "HTC successfully completed the US$1.1 billion business co-operation agreement with Google at the end of January, and the gain related to the transaction will be recognised in Q1'18, enabling greater investment in emerging technologies, which will be vital across all of our businesses and present significant long-term growth opportunities," the Taiwanese firm said in a statement.
