Juneyao Airlines invests $1.9 bln for China Eastern stake, shares rise

SINGAPORE/SHANGHAI July 11 (Reuters) - Juneyao Airlines and its parent are investing $1.9 billion for a stake of around 5 percent in state-owned China Eastern Airlines , saying the investment is in line with Chinese policy and will boost Juneyao's brand abroad. The investment, which was unveiled as part of China Eastern's up to $2.23 billion share sale announced on Tuesday, comes as the Chinese government has promised to open up more of its state-owned sectors to private investment as part of a wider effort to make its companies more globally competitive. Shanghai-based Juneyao Airlines said the investment was meant to improve the strategic partnership between state-owned capital and private capital in line with Chinese policy and to help build up its brand internationally.

Chinese Airlines Become Collateral Damage in U.S. Trade Spat

Chinese airlines ordered more than $100 billion of planes from Airbus SE and Boeing Co. in the past decade. Paying those bills is getting harder with the prospect of a trade war pushing the local currency to its lowest level in six months. A weaker yuan means Air China Ltd., China Southern Airlines Co. and China Eastern Airlines Corp. will find it more costly to pay for new aircraft, which are priced in dollars.

China to ease "one route, one airline" policy for Chinese carriers

China will ease its near decade-old "one route, one airline" policy for Chinese airlines, the country's aviation regulator said on Monday, allowing for increased competition on long-haul international routes. The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), in a statement on its website, said it has revised rules in response to a changing aviation market as well as the 2019 opening of a second international airport in Beijing, which in turn is aimed at creating the world's largest aviation hub in the city. The CAAC introduced the policy in 2009 for long-haul international routes to prevent mainly China's state-backed airlines from competing too aggressively on routes deemed difficult to profit from.
