Air Berlin seeks damages from Etihad - Rheinische Post

German airline Air Berlin (AB1.DE) is demanding damages from its part-owner Etihad Airways for letting it become insolvent and it hopes for payment of at least 10 million euros (£8.94 million), Air Berlin's administrator told a German newspaper. "We are in negotiations with Etihad and hope to reach a general settlement soon. Air Berlin, Germany's second-biggest airline after Lufthansa, filed for bankruptcy in August after Etihad, the owner of almost 30 percent of Air Berlin, withdrew funding following years of losses.

[$$] Deutsche Lufthansa Has More Room to Climb

Dow Jones Global Indexes | Global Stock Markets Another day, another European airline flies into storm clouds. Deutsche Lufthansa (ticker:ticker::LHA.Germany) has scored an upgrade to first class, so to speak, thanks in part to these flops by other carriers.

Air Berlin plane grounded in Iceland over unpaid charges

FRANKFURT/BERLIN (Reuters) - An Air Berlin (AB1.DE) airliner was grounded at Iceland's Keflavik airport late on Thursday because the insolvent German carrier had not paid its airport charges, Keflavik operator Isavia said in a statement. It said the unpaid charges had been incurred before Air Berlin, which has struggled to turn a profit over the last decade, filed for insolvency on Aug. 15. According to German magazine Stern, the Airbus A320 landed at Keflavik at 10:35 p.m. local time on Thursday and was due to depart for Duesseldorf just after midnight.

Air Berlin pilot's goodbye draws watchdog's scrutiny

A German aviation watchdog is scrutinising a fly-past by Air Berlin's (AB1.DE) last long-haul flight to its hub in Duesseldorf, which German media said was the pilot's unique way of saying "goodbye" to his passengers and the insolvent airline. The pilot of the flight from Miami on Monday pulled up the aircraft above the runway in Duesseldorf and made a low pass over the airport before coming around and landing. The Federal Aviation Office is examining the incident," a spokesman for Air Berlin said on Tuesday.

British budget airline easyJet (EZJ.L) won't enter the rapidly growing low-cost, long-haul market given its abundance of options to buy parts of failed European airlines, CEO Carolyn McCall said on Tuesday. In the last week, easyJet has confirmed its interest in parts of Air Berlin (AB1.DE) and Alitalia (CAITLA.UL), which went into administration earlier this year, and McCall said easyJet was also interested in airport slots of failed airline Monarch [MONA.UL] after it went bust at the start of October. EasyJet has also agreed a long haul connection service with Norwegian Air Shuttle (NWC.OL).

Austrian competition authorities said on Friday they believed Lufthansa, which also owns Austrian Airlines, would be too dominant in Vienna if it owned Austria-based Niki.
