Air Canada said Wednesday that it has removed the Boeing 737 MAX from its flying schedule until February 14 because ongoing regulatory uncertainty could cause problems as it launches a new reservation system. Transportation authorities around the world grounded the MAX, a more fuel-efficient update for the popular short-to-medium range jet, in March after two deadly crashes that killed 346 people. The no-fly order has hit Air Canada harder than other airlines because the MAX represented a larger portion of its passenger capacity.

Air Canada said Wednesday it has removed Boeing Co.'s 737 Max aircraft from its flight schedules until Feb. 14, 2020. The air carrier had previously said the planes, which have been grounded by regulators since March for safety concerns, following two deadly crashes, would be grounded until at least January. "We are taking this prudent step as a result of the ongoing regulatory uncertainty about the timing of the aircraft returning to service," said Chief Commercial Officer Lucie Guillemette. "The extension will give us scheduling predictability through the implementation of the first phase of our new reservation system and the required stability as we prepare the second phase of the system roll-out, introducing it into the airport environment." Last week, American Airlines Group Inc. said the 737 Max planes would remain out of service until mid-January, while United Airlines Holdings Inc. has previously said it the planes were on its schedule from December. Air Canada's stock shed 0.7% in afternoon trading, while Boeing's stock rose 0.3%, the NYSE Arca Airline Index inched up less than 0.1% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average has slipped 15 points, or 0.1%.

MONTREAL/PARIS (Reuters) - While the world's Boeing 737 MAX fleet remains grounded after two fatal crashes, a solitary Air Canada plane has been spotted in the skies, shuttling between Quebec and Ontario. In a rare exemption, approved by Canadian aviation regulator Transport Canada, the 11 flights in August and September were partly to maintain the qualifications of senior training pilots, Air Canada told Reuters in response to a query about flight tracking data. A spokesman for Air Canada said the airline was not able to use similar 737s within its fleet "to maintain check pilot authority in alignment with (Canadian aviation regulations)".
