Industrial gases firms Air Products and Air Liquide may bid for parts of peers Linde and Praxair that the two groups may be forced to divest in the event of a merger, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported on Friday. Linde and Praxair need to obtain anti-trust approval for their merger in 25 countries, for which they have said they were prepared to make divestments up to a "pain threshold" of $3.7 billion in sales beyond which the deal may no longer make sense. The planned $74 billion merger of German industrial gases group Linde and U.S. peer Praxair is on course, with regulators expected to finish reviewing offer documents by mid-August, Linde said as it published financial results on Friday. "We remain on track to complete these tasks and expect to close the transaction by the second half of next year," Linde Chief Financial Officer Sven Schneider told analysts during a conference call but was otherwise tight-lipped on what progress preparations for the transaction were making. The deal will create a global leader to overtake France's Air Liquide with a combined market value of $75 billion, revenue of $30 billion and 88,000 staff.

FRANKFURT/MUNICH, May 31 (Reuters) - A crack has appeared in German labour opposition to Linde's proposed merger with U.S. peer Praxair, three people familiar with the deal told Reuters, making it likely that the $73 billion deal will be approved on Thursday. One Linde labour representative on the supervisory board may not vote with the other five against the merger, the people said on Wednesday, meaning that the vote will probably be carried by the six shareholder representatives on the board.
German industrial gases group Linde's supervisory board is due to vote on a merger agreement with U.S. peer Praxair on June 1, two people close to the matter told Reuters on Friday. The companies said on Wednesday that they had reached a deal in principle on a Business Combination Agreement for the proposed $70 billion merger, but some unanswered questions will be addressed at Thursday's meeting, one of the sources said without elaborating. Linde declined to comment on the matter.
