Stocks plunged on Friday morning on further signs of accelerating inflation and concerns about the Fed's response. In a widely anticipated release, the Labor Department said that consumer prices rose at an 8.6% annual rate in May, up from 8.3% growth in April and above the consensus forecast of 8.3%. The reading was the highest in more than 40 years. The core CPI, excluding food and energy, rose 6.0% from the prior year, above the consensus of 5.9% growth. The Dow fell 2.1%, the S&P 2.5%, and the Nasdaq 3.1%. Crude oil fell to $121 per barrel, while gold traded near $1851 per ounce.
