AngloGold Faces South Africa Doubt as M&A Gold Rush Quickens

Having long since been eclipsed by its rivals, AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. may need to leave home to keep up. Newmont Mining Corp. and Barrick Gold Corp. have forged mega deals that will extend their lead over AngloGold. Saddled with Mponeng, the world’s deepest mine in a dying South African industry that’s struggling to contain costs, the third-biggest producer could boost its value by leaving the country, according to Rene Hochreiter, analyst at Noah Capital Markets Ltd. in Johannesburg.

New Barrick CEO eyes miners' alliance to fix Tanzania tax row

LONDON/TORONTO, Nov 23 (Reuters) - Barrick Gold's incoming chief executive said he wants to pull together Tanzania's mining industry to tackle a "desperate" tax dispute that has snared several companies, including the firm's Acacia Mining unit. President John Magufuli, nicknamed "The Bulldozer", swept to power in 2015 pledging to secure a bigger share of resource wealth and cut corruption. Acacia was later handed a $190 billion tax bill - about four times the country's gross domestic product - for underreporting output.

This South African Gold Miner Has a Huge Rerating Potential

As Positive Catalysts for Gold Emerge, Which Miners May Benefit? South African miners have traditionally traded at a discount to their global counterparts, primarily due to South Africa’s laws, labor concerns, and infrastructure challenges. What Will Drive Barrick Gold’s Free Cash Flow in 2018 and Beyond?

Since the generation of free cash flow (or FCF) creates shareholder value and helps a business’s long-term prospects, it’s important for investors to track gold miners’ (GDX) abilities to generate FCF. Barrick Gold (ABX) has a strategy of value over volume, which prioritizes profitable production. The company defines value creation for shareholders in terms of FCF per share. Barrick Gold generated FCF of $319 million in the third quarter compared to -$172.0 million in the second quarter.

Why Randgold Is a Good Acquisition for Barrick

Historically, we have generated alpha for our investors by anticipating M&A action, overweighting companies we believe are acquisition targets and underweighting possible acquirers. While we were correct in our assessment, we didn’t get the benefit of Barrick’s performance after the deal was announced. Prior to Morila, Randgold was involved in other African mines that hadn’t fared so well.

The decline in the AISC reflects cost improvements from operations at the Mponeng mine in South Africa, the Kibali mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Iduapriem mine in Ghana and at the Tropicana mine in Western Australia.
