Fallen Angel Risk May be Overstated, Says Ratings Agency

Heading into this year, many bond market observers were concerned about the state of BBB-rated corporate debt and how much of that debt could be downgraded to junk, turning those bonds into fallen angels. The VanEck Fallen Angel High Yield Bond ETF (ANGL) is the dominant exchange traded funds providing access to fallen angels, or corporate bonds originally issued with investment-grade ratings that are later downgraded to junk. ANGL tracks the ICE BofAML US Fallen Angel High Yield Index (H0FA), “which is comprised of below investment grade corporate bonds denominated in U.S. dollars, issued in the U.S. domestic market and that were rated investment grade at the time of issuance,” according to VanEck.

How This ETF is Avoiding Some Controversial Fallen Angels

Shares of California utility PG&E Corp. lost more than half their value last week after company said it could seek Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as soon as this month due to facing liabilities of up to $30 billion related to California wildfires in 2017 and 2018. Predictably, ratings agencies lowered ratings on PG&E bonds, taking the company from BBB- to a highly speculative C rating, meaning PG&E corporate bonds fit the definition of fallen angels. Fallen angels are those corporate bonds born with investment-grade ratings that are later downgraded to junk.

Fallen Angel ETF Contends With Rates, Trade Issues

While there are some concerns about traditional high-yield corporate bonds and the related ETFs, the VanEck Fallen Angel High Yield Bond ETF (ANGL) can still be a solid idea for income investors. As is the case with many high-yield bond funds, ANGL has been hindered this year by a combination of rising interest rates and concerns about the results of the White House's efforts to implement tariffs on U.S. trading partners. ANGL tracks so-called fallen angel speculative-grade rated debt, or debt securities that were initially issued with an investment-grade rating but were later downgraded to junk territory.

This Bond ETF Could Regain Its Angelic Status

Amid fears of rising interest rates in the U.S. and talk that default rates are climbing, some bond market experts expected a rough year for high-yield corporate debt. While there have been ample warnings regarding the health of the junk debt market, the iShares iBoxx $ High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (NYSE: HYG), the largest junk bond exchange trade fund, is up half a percent year-to-date.

Why Emerging Market Debt Is an Interesting Choice Right Now

RODILOSSO: Not all of the flows that we’ve seen this year, for instance, in emerging markets have gone into local currency debt. In fact, it’s certainly the case for most investors that comfort with emerging markets is still on the U.S. dollar, or hard currency side. Because, at any level along the rating scale, an emerging markets issuer tends to have to pay a higher yield than a U.S. issuer.
