France's Areva to cut Niger uranium production on price drop

NIAMEY/PARIS, Oct 11 (Reuters) - French uranium mining and nuclear fuel group Areva NewCo will slash output and reduce staffing levels at its Niger mines in response to low uranium prices, the company and its unions said. A spokeswoman for Areva's open-pit Somair mine close to Arlit said the mine will reduce its annual production of uranium concentrate to 1,700 tonnes in 2018 from 2,100 tonnes this year. "Market conditions are very difficult ... Somair has to adapt its industrial organization and its workforce accordingly.

France's nuclear spent-fuel pools major security risk - Greenpeace

The spent-fuel pools of French utility EDF's nuclear reactors are highly vulnerable to attacks, Greenpeace said in a report published on Tuesday. Written by a group of nuclear experts and delivered to French authorities, the report says that spent-fuel pools, which typically contain the equivalent of one to three nuclear reactor cores, have not been designed to withstand external aggression.

Areva's Finland reactor to start in 2019 after another delay

The start of regular power production at Finland's biggest nuclear reactor Olkiluoto 3 will be pushed back another five months to May 2019, owner Teollisuuden Voima (TVO) said on Monday, the latest in a decade of delays. The project in western Finland, built by a consortium led by French state-owned nuclear group Areva, has been hit by repeated delays, soaring costs and court disputes. Originally planned to start in 2009, its most recent target for regular power production had been the end of 2018.

    Areva’s "NewCo" bonds resist downgrade

Areva's bonds defied an S&P downgrade, after the company transferred its debt to a new entity just under a year ago. An investor told IFR their separation from the French nuclear reactor manufacturer was probably why the notes have not reacted to news of the downgrade, pointing to NewCo's S&P rating and outlook. S&P rates NewCo BB with a positive outlook, arguing that it is not constrained by Areva's credit quality, given Areva's position as a minority shareholder.

Areva's Finnish client appeals over French nuclear restructuring

Finnish utility Teollisuuden Voima (TVO) has filed an appeal to the European Commission over France's restructuring of its nuclear industry, arguing that it could leave Areva, supplier to its long-delayed Olkiluoto reactor project, unable to meet liabilities. TVO and France's Areva are locked in a dispute over years of delays and cost overruns on the Olkiluoto 3 EPR nuclear reactor project in southwest Finland. Under France's recovery plan, nearly entirely state-owned Areva will sell its nuclear reactor business to power utility EDF.

Dismantling nuclear: German power firms sell new skills

Energy groups E.ON and EnBW are tearing down their nuclear plants at massive cost following Germany's decision to abandon nuclear power by 2022, but they are seeking to turn a burden into business by exporting their newfound dismantling skills. Germany is the only country in the world to dump the technology as a direct consequence of Japan's Fukushima disaster in 2011, a decision that came as a major blow to the two energy firms which owned most of Germany's 17 operational nuclear stations. E.ON and EnBW have already shut down five plants between them and must close another five by 2022.

Politics weigh as Korea's KEPCO eyes the Toshiba nuclear option

SEOUL/PARIS, March 24 (Reuters) - South Korea's KEPCO , the likeliest suitor for Toshiba Corp's troubled nuclear business, is holding off from making an approach because of question marks over the scale of damage at the unit and political uncertainty in both South Korea and the United States, people with direct knowledge of the matter say. Japanese TV-to-rail conglomerate Toshiba has been battered by a $6.3 billion hit from overruns in the nuclear business and has widened a probe into governance failures at its U.S.-based unit, Westinghouse.

France, Japan back free navigation in Asia-Pacific, Abe says

France and Japan support a "free and open maritime order" in the Asia-Pacific region, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said after talks with French President Francois Hollande on Monday. The message seemed aimed at China, which claims almost all the South China Sea and which has fuelled concern in Japan and the West with its growing military presence in the waterway. "Francois and I agreed on the importance of ensuring a free and open maritime order in the Indo-Pacific region (and) of continuing to support the stability and prosperity of this region," Abe told reporters after the talks.

Niger's parliament to investigate "uraniumgate" sale

Niger's lower house of parliament voted unanimously on Friday to investigate accusations that President Mahamadou Issoufou's former chief of staff improperly participated in the state mining company's purchase of 5.5 million pounds of uranium. A Nigerien newspaper published documents last month showing a bank transfer in November 2011 for $320 million from an account belonging to state miner Sopamin to an account controlled by an offshore company called Optima Energy. The bank transfer was signed by Issoufou's chief of staff at the time and current finance minister, Hassoumi Massaoudou, who lawmakers have said had no authority to do so.
