At first, it was easy to dismiss Academy Sports & Outdoors (ticker: ASO) as a pandemic play: People were snapping up outdoor gear and exercise equipment to fill the days at home with activities other than just snacking. Barron’s argued in July 2021 that the company was much more than just that a pandemic darling—thanks to factors like an expanding store base, lean balance sheet, and strong management team.
