Brazil's real and stocks gave up gains on Monday, as initial euphoria following Jair Bolsonaro's presidential win gave way to caution over implementation of his promised policy reforms, while Mexico's stocks hit a near two-year low after a vote to scrap a partially built airport in Mexico City soured sentiment. The consultation is being held in more than 500 municipalities, home to about 80 percent of the population, incoming transport minister Javier Jimenez Espriu said.
The incoming government of leftist President-elect Manuel Lopez Obrador opened polls on Thursday for a public consultation to decide whether to ditch a multi-billion dollar new airport that is already partly built. The public will be polled from Oct. 25 to Oct. 28 on whether Lopez Obrador's government should finish the ambitious new Mexico City airport or scrap it and upgrade the Santa Lucia military air base to complement the existing hub. The consultation will be held in over 500 municipalities, covering about 80 percent of Mexico's population, incoming transportation minister Javier Jimenez Espriu said this month.
Of the three publicly traded Mexican airport operators, Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacifico PAC holds the largest passenger market share at 26%, compared with 23% for Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste ASR and 15% for Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte OMAB . Unique routes served by Pacifico have grown at a roughly 6% average over the past five years, and we expect this trend to continue. In the past, few direct routes were offered to passengers because Mexico City served as the central hub and connector between airports.
Continued weaknesses at its newly acquired operations caused the Latin American airport operator’s earnings to fly backward.
