Colombia's Avianca investigating potential past bribery on tickets, upgrades

Colombia's Avianca Holdings said on Thursday that internal investigators are looking into potential bribery, as the airline had in the past given free tickets and free upgrades to government officials of several countries. Avianca has gone through a management upheaval in recent months after longtime chairman and controlling shareholder German Efromovich was ousted in a boardroom coup in May led by United Airlines Holdings Inc, which had lent money to one of Efromovich's companies. United has not seized the shares, but did appoint a new chairman and Avianca has a new chief executive officer as well.

LifeMiles Ltd. -- Moody's downgrades LifeMiles to B2; negative outlook

Moody's Investors Service (Moody's) today downgraded to B2 from Ba2 LifeMiles Ltd.'s (LifeMiles) corporate family and senior secured ratings. LifeMiles' downgrade to B2 reflects its exposure to the weak credit profile and liquidity pressures of Avianca Holdings, S.A. (Avianca) which increases the risk of additional up streaming of cash flows to shareholders, either in the form of dividends, most likely financed with incremental debt, or anticipated purchases of airline tickets.

United Airlines shakes up Avianca leadership after shareholder default

United, which is proposing a three-way joint business agreement with Avianca and Panama's Copa, said the move follows a default by Efromovich's holding company BRW Aviation on a $456 million loan it made six months ago. United's loan was backed by Efromovich's 51.5% stake in Avianca. As a result, United is ceding voting rights to Kingsland Holdings, the Colombian carrier’s second-largest shareholder.

Brazilian airline Azul SA on Monday made a new attempt to purchase some of bankrupt airline Avianca Brasil's most coveted routes, offering $145 million and reversing a decision not to participate. Court suspends Avianca Brasil bankruptcy auction of airport slots

A Brazilian appeals court on Monday suspended a bankruptcy auction set for Tuesday, in which struggling carrier Avianca Brasil hoped to raise at least $140 million by selling some of its coveted airport takeoff and landing rights, known as slots. The suspension could put further stress on Avianca Brasil, the country's No. 4 airline, which has been operating with very little cash since filing for bankruptcy protection in December. The airline said in a statement that it was still analyzing what it would do in response and that it had not filed an appeal as of Tuesday afternoon.
