American Funds are good solid funds that may cost you bit on the front end if your initial investment is small and you buy the A shares, but if you are in this for the long haul, there really isn't a better fund family to be in. Good income, decent growth and they never fall as hard as other funds do when the bear shows his teeth.

I have been in AWSHX since 1996 when I decide to create additional income for retirement. The first seven years of my retirement came only with one stumbling and that was March 20th, 2020. COVID-19 took it's toll on stock market performance. Capital Gains were lean that year. How ever it returned in 2021. I have found that occasionally there is a down turn in the stock market causing poor performance. As for Dividends I have not missed any since I have invested in it from 1996. AWSHX fund is definitely tied to stock market performance. When the stock market is BULLISH, then AWSHX is doing well. WASHINGTON MUTUAL INVESTORS FUND IS RELATIVELY STABLE. The investment structure safe guards against down turns in the market. I personally like the fund. When investing in mutual funds, you should be prepared to be in it for the long haul. If you read the FUND DESCRIPTION for AWSHX it tells the investor what the FUND OBJECTIVES ARE. Be sure to read the FUND OBJECTIVES so you are well informed as to what to expect in returns. Great expectations in returns that do not come forth, are often brought on by not understanding AWSHX'S FUND DESCRIPTION. It is in my opinion WASHINGTON MUTUAL INVESTORS FUND is a great and well managed mutual fund to this date.

I was curious to see what my AWSHX did for this year, I did not have 1/1/16 available but I did have 1/20/16 to compare today's value with. Including what we just received in dividend, I was up 22.5% for the year and I had no buys or sells during that period. I am happy with 2016 but 2015 was flat (but so was the market). I taught college statistics for 32 years so I do know my numbers.

I have been with the American funds for 29 years
and if I had put all my money in those funds instead of
playing the market I would be much better off in my
    retirement years.

Terrible Funds - American Funds. I have been an investor in American Funds for 28 years and I must say the returns are awful. They always under perform the peer market. ALWAYS! I actually have a college fund for my child and over 9 years the fund is worth less than it was 9 years ago. AVOID AMERICAN FUNDS!

Latest - Checked and even though all markets are up approximately 5-6% in 2016 all 5 of my American Funds have lost money (under 0% return) for the year. PLEASE research before you buy any American Funds

They are correct in calling American Funds a DAWG, maybe a dawg with flees. I unfortunately have owned CAIBX,AWSHX,AGTHX and the euro trash one. AEPGX. 11 years ago I made the mistake of American Funds, don't do it!

American Funds continue to be horrible. I feel I need to report all this so potential investors know what they are getting into. Yesterday the DIA was up 39 points (0.21%) and Nasdaq up 28 points (0.54%) yet ALL 5 of my American Funds mutuals were down. CWIAX down 1.10%, CGFAX down 0.74%, AMCPX down 0.20%, CNWAX down 3.13% and AWSHX down 0.16%. How bad can these guys invest???
