    Rheinmetall beats BAE to $2.5 billion Australian contract

    Germany's Rheinmetall (RHMG.DE) beat BAE Systems (BAES.L) to a $2.5 billion (1.79 billion pounds) Australian order for armoured reconnaissance vehicles, which comes on top of an existing major contract with the country for utility vehicles. The Australian defence ministry will now enter exclusive final negotiations with Rheinmetall, the company said in a statement on Wednesday. If the contract is finalised, the 211 Boxer vehicles will be built by Australian workers, using Australian steel and will create up to 1,450 jobs, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and the defence ministry said in a separate statement.

    Britain agreed on Friday to finalise talks with Saudi Arabia on a multi-billion pound order for 48 Typhoon aircraft, the fighter plane's maker BAE Systems (BAES.L) said. BAE, Europe's biggest defence contractor, has long awaited a major Saudi order for Typhoons, and slowed production in 2016 to ensure it would remain competitive. The memorandum of intent was signed after Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman met with British defence minister Gavin Williamson.

    BAE Systems positive on outlook for Typhoon orders - CEO

    The opportunity for BAE Systems to win new orders for the Eurofighter Typhoon was "as good as it has been in quite some time", said the British defence company's chief executive on Thursday. "The opportunity book for Typhoon is as good as I've seen it in the last two years and probably as good as it's been in quite some time," CEO Charles Woodburn told reporters on a call. The Eurofighter, a joint project between BAE, France's Airbus and Italy's Leonardo, was buoyed by a 24-jet 5 billion pound deal with Qatar last December.
