A profit warning from AG Barr saw its shares collapse 28 per cent to their lowest level in more than two years as the maker of Irn-Bru blamed a lack of Scottish sunshine for a drop in sales. AG Barr had enjoyed a bumper summer in 2018, with hot temperatures and lower prices fuelling a surge in soft drink sales.
AG Barr insists that disappointing Scottish weather is not an oxymoron (and no, it is not true that summer is many Scots’ favourite day of the year). Irn-Bru gets you through, according to one of the brand’s memorable slogans.
Unhelpful weather and problems with its Rockstar and Rubicon Juice brands meant first-half revenue was down 10 per cent year on year, meaning full-year profit would probably drop as much as 20 per cent, the soft-drink maker said. Drinks companies take two-thirds of profit from the second and third quarters, said Jefferies, which estimated that the UK market accounts for 72 per cent of revenue for Britvic and 58 per cent for Fevertree.
Americans are thirsty for energy drinks, so brands like Coke and Amazon are giving industry titans like Monster and Red Bull a run for their money. Coca Cola Co. (KO) which has a 16.7% ownership interest in Monster Beverage (MNST) rolled out its first energy drink in Europe in April, and on Thursday a flash mob of dancers in partnership with Spotify (SPOT) surprised Londoners with energetic performances and free samples of the new Coke Energy in front of the Piccadilly Circus Lights.

"The impact of the Soft Drinks Industry Levy has been evident across the UK soft drinks market with value growth significantly outstripping volume in the period," the company said. The levy, dubbed the "sugar tax", was imposed on makers of sugary drinks last year, forcing A.G.Barr to change the recipe for its prized Irn Bru, much to the ire of its many devotees. For the soft drinks industry, further regulatory intervention is on the horizon," the company added in a statement.
