BASF cuts outlook, now sees profits falling 15-20 percent in 2018

Germany's BASF (BASFn.DE) slashed its forecast for 2018 profits on Friday, saying the decline was mainly due to its chemicals segment while low water levels on the Rhine and weak automotive demand especially in China were also to blame. BASF said in a statement that it now expected earnings before interest and tax before special items (EBIT) to decline by 15-20 percent from last year's 7.6 billion euros (6.84 billion pounds), compared to an earlier forecast of a 10 percent fall. Germany's industry-heavy DAX index (.GDAXI) has underperformed its peers and slid into bear-market territory, reflecting its relatively high global exposure.

The German chemical producer warned that it now expects a 15% to 20% decrease in 2018 earnings before interest and taxes before special items, compared with previous guidance of a slight decline. BASF also pointed to a sharp decline in prices for isocyanate--a material used in the production of polyurethanes--weak steam-cracker margins and lower demand from the automotive industry.

BASF makes low-nickel wager amid scramble for battery metals

German chemicals giant BASF (BASFn.DE) is betting on a new recipe for electric car batteries which stretches the time between charges while cutting dependence on nickel to help shave costs and grab more of a growing market. It is part of flurry of activity in the sphere of cathodes materials, a major component of battery cells for an anticipated switch to electric vehicles (EV) due to clean air regulation. At the moment BASF and others, including Belgium's Umicore (UMI.BR), a market leader, are boosting the nickel content to allow more energy storage and replace expensive cobalt, which is largely sourced from mines in Congo, where exploitation is rife.
