Ultimately, “as such strong forces in liquidity surface, less liquid firms are likely to amplify the flow effects.” They warn that more research is needed, but preliminary effects seem to back up recent studies that have shown that ETF flows can affect small caps: Those with high ETF exposure can experience liquidity shocks via ETF flows, which translates to volatility in the underlying security. Firms such as Meredith Corp. (MDP), Black Hills Corp. (BKH) and United Bankshares (UBSI) currently have the most sizable ETF exposures in the Russell 2000 index.
