Berkeley Energia, a company that has spent years trying to get approval to mine for uranium in Spain, said its British chief executive had resigned and it would look for a Spanish national to lead the company. Paul Atherley, who joined the mining company in June 2015, will step down to “focus on his other investments,” the company said. Mr Atherley had promoted the Salamanca mine as a European source of uranium to feed the region’s nuclear power plants.

The founders of renewables energy investor Berkeley Energy have hired U.S. investment bank JP Morgan to evaluate options, including a sale, for the company's investment funds, which could be worth around $500 million, banking sources said. Berkeley Energy invests in 30 energy projects across nine emerging markets via three renewables funds, two of which focus on hydro, wind and solar in India and the Philippines and a third on Sub-Saharan Africa. The funds are likely to be attractive to infrastructure and sovereign wealth funds, seeking to diversify into renewable energy, and oil and gas companies to try to meet government climate change goals and satisfy calls from investors to reduce their carbon footprints.

A Spanish village has denied Berkeley Energia (BKY.AX) a permit to build Europe's only open-cast uranium mine near Salamanca in western Spain, casting renewed doubt over the Australia-based company's sole project. According to a document obtained by Reuters on Saturday, the municipality of Retortillo ruled on Dec. 19 against the mine, saying Berkeley did not own the land needed for the project and the company had failed to present the relevant documentation. A spokesman for Berkeley Energia, whose shares slid to a near-record low of 0.14 euros last week on concerns over prospects for the mine, said the company had received no notification on the matter.

The Spanish government has decided not to deliver the permits necessary to open the European Union's only open-cast uranium mine near Salamanca, dealing a serious blow to Australian mining company Berkeley Energia's (BKY.AX) plans. Berkeley later requested a trading halt on its shares, which fell nearly 29 percent in Australian trading hours on Tuesday, citing media articles about the Salamanca mine. The company asked the Australian Securities Exchange to suspend trading until it released a statement on the Salamanca mine or until the opening of trade on Oct. 19, whichever came first, according to the letter sent to the regulator.
