Shares in French rail group Alstom fell as much as 7 per cent on Thursday after its largest shareholder Bouygues sold down 13 per cent of the stock — or roughly half of its holding — to institutional investors. Bouygues had supported the deal and expressed disappointment following the decision but said it remained confident in the rail group’s future.
Shares of Alstom SA tumbled nearly 5% on Thursday after telecoms group Bouygues SA said it has sold a 13% stake in the French multinational group. Bouygues said it remains Alstom's main shareholder with a 14.7% stake even after that sale. Shares of Bouygues rose 0.8% in Paris.

Bouygues posted a smaller-than-expected first-quarter loss on Thursday as telecoms helped offset weakness at the French conglomerate's Colas road-building business. Bouygues stuck to its forecast for improved group profitability this year, driving its shares up 3% in early session trading. Losses of 298 million euros at Colas, whose road building activity traditionally slows down during the winter months, were partly offset by a profit of 91 million euros at Bouygues Telecom and a profit of 63 million euros at TF1.

French conglomerate Bouygues, which has a 28 percent stake in Alstom, said it regretted the European Union's decision to veto a merger between Alstom and Siemens but added it was confident over Alstom's prospects. "Whatever happens, Alstom will continue to develop on its own path," Bouygues said in a statement. "As the key shareholder, Bouygues backs Alstom's strategy and is confident about its future," added Bouygues.
