Taylor Wimpey warns on margins, British homebuilders slump

It said costs had risen more than expected early this year due to surprisingly high demand for materials amid a buildup of buffer stocks in the industry on political uncertainty related partly to Britain's decision to leave the European Union. Taylor Wimpey now expects building costs to rise about 5 percent in 2019 versus a previous 3-4 percent forecast. Taylor Wimpey's shares fell 7.6 percent to 177.7 pence, pushing them to the bottom of London's blue chip index and dragging down rivals Persimmon Plc, Barratt Development Plc and Berkeley.

FTSE 100 gains, MPs votes on Brexit process eyed

The FTSE 100 edged 0.1 percent higher and the FTSE 250, which is more domestically focussed, was up by 0.6 percent at 0940 GMT. Barclays, Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds were all higher with CMC Markets analyst Michael Hewson attributing gains to hopes that MPs could agree a possible next course of action which could lead to a softer Brexit. Prime Minister Theresa May is also set to address her Conservative MPs, possibly to set out a timetable for her departure to win parliamentary support for her controversial Brexit deal after being heavily defeated twice in parliament.

Investors grab Brexit bargains among UK housebuilders

Daring investors are dipping their toes back into UK housebuilders, attracted by high dividend yields and low valuations even though they are seen as among the most vulnerable sectors in the event of a messy Brexit. As Britain's exit from the EU remains shrouded in fog, housebuilders have been top targets for short sellers betting on a fall in the shares, but recent data shows short positions have fallen and some investors are buying back in. To those investors, Brexit fears and the perceived risk to housebuilders also give the potential for strong rallies.

UK housebuilder shares bounce as traders hedge Brexit bets

Shares in UK housebuilders bounced off two-year lows on Wednesday as investors and traders covered bearish bets ahead of next week's vote on Prime Minister May's Brexit deal. The bounce didn't signal a sudden change of mind from the market over the challenges facing housebuilders in an economy hurt by the decision to exit the European Union, but rather an acknowledgement that they may not have much further to fall, traders said. FTSE 100 housebuilders Berkeley Group (BKGH.L), Barratt Development (BDEV.L), Persimmon (PSN.L), and Taylor Wimpey (TW.L) jumped 3.9 to 6.5 percent, topping the FTSE 100 (.FTSE) leader board.

British stocks battered on Brexit deal backlash, exporters gain

LONDON/MILAN (Reuters) - British shares suffered and sterling tumbled on Thursday as the growing risk of a disorderly divorce from the European Union spooked investors, with leading index the FTSE 100 moving for most of the day in rare lockstep with the domestic currency. The FTSE 100 (.FTSE) eventually ended broadly flat, reversing the session's earlier 0.8 percent fall, which came even as sterling dived after high-profile resignations thrust Prime Minister Theresa May's government into turmoil, just a day after she clinched a draft Brexit deal. The FTSE 100, which makes 70 percent of its income overseas, is normally boosted by a weaker pound, but losses in companies more exposed to the domestic economy, such as banks and housebuilders, almost offset gains in the big exporters.

BP 'blowout' results keep FTSE afloat as Reckitt tumbles

A strong update from BP helped the UK's top share index end a choppy session in the black on Tuesday, offsetting disappointing results from heavyweight Reckitt Benckiser and outperforming European equities. Heavyweight BP (BP.L) rose two percent after quarterly profits at the oil major reached a five-year high, boosted by stronger oil prices and as production rose thanks to new fields. The energy sector provided the biggest boost to the FTSE 100 but gains were curbed by a disappointing update from Reckitt Benckiser (RB.L).
