Canada's Centerra Gold Inc said on Monday that search operation for two missing workers at its Kumtor gold mine in Kyrgyzstan was underway and that it had temporarily shut the mine as it was focusing on rescue efforts. "A re-start of open pit mining operations won't occur until the Company is certain that the search and rescue efforts will not be affected and a revised waste dumping plan has been completed," the company said in a statement.
Kumtor’s emergency response personnel are coordinating with search and rescue teams from the Kyrgyz Government Ministry of Emergencies in the search for its missing employees. The Lysii Waste Rock Dump has now stabilized sufficiently that light equipment is being employed in the search effort. Open pit mining operations remain temporarily halted because of the need to focus on search and rescue efforts but also because 100% of the waste rock being mined was to be placed on the Lysii Waste Rock Dump located in the Lysii valley.
Search and rescue operations are on and the company has temporarily stopped open pit mining operations at Kumtor, it said. The miner said it carried out an emergency evacuation after the movement at the Lysii Waste Rock Dump early Sunday morning, but the two employees did not appear at the gathering area. Centerra said it would continue to process ore stockpiled on the surface and reiterated its production outlook for 2019.

Centerra Gold Inc. (“Centerra”) (CG.TO) announced today that all conditions precedent to the completion of the Strategic Agreement entered into with the Kyrgyz Republic Government on September 11, 2017 have been satisfied or waived and all parties have therefore acknowledged that the First Completion Date (as defined in the Strategic Agreement) has occurred. All parties to the Strategic Agreement are now moving to terminate the remaining legal proceedings affecting the Kumtor Project, in particular, the international arbitration proceeding at the Permanent Court of Arbitration as well as certain civil proceedings.
