Wayne Smith, Community Health's chief executive, said in a statement it had been his company's goal since acquiring HMA to resolve the investigation, which involved issues that occurred before the deal.
HMA agreed to pay more than $260 million and entered a deferred prosecution agreement Tuesday. The deal settles criminal charges that the hospital chain allegedly paid physicians kickbacks in a scheme to defraud Medicare and other federal health programs. HMA was acquired by the for-profit hospital Community Health Systems in 2014.
