Cineworld is hoping for a better end to 2019 after a “disappointing” run of sequels led to a drop in box office admissions and profits in the first half of the year. Mooky Greidinger, chief executive, said that while sequels were easier to market as movie-goers already had some idea of the storyline, they still had to be “well done” if they were to attract big audiences. Mr Greidinger’s comments came as the world’s second-largest cinema group by number of screens reported that admissions fell 15 per cent to 136m in the six months to June 30.
The rollout of Regal Unlimited, a year after AMC Stubs A-List, seems to make Helios and Matheson's currently suspended MoviePass app obsolete.
Cineworld will sell 17 cinemas for a cash consideration of $286.3 million (222 million pounds) and lease them back under 15-year leases. The company, which had bought U.S. cinema chain Regal Entertainment for $3.6 billion, said it was also in talks with a separate party for a sale and leaseback deal involving 18 multi-screen cinemas based in the United States. The terms of the deal will be similar to Cineworld's deal with U.S.-based REIT Realty Income.

The domestically-focussed FTSE 250, more exposed to outcomes of Brexit proceedings, rose 0.6 percent. Wednesday's parliamentary vote paved the way for another one on Thursday that could delay Britain's exit from the European Union until at least the end of June.
Cineworld benefited from a slew of big-ticket releases in 2018 including action movies "Black Panther" and "Avengers: Infinity War" and films like "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again", "Incredibles 2" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" in the UK. While "Captain Marvel" had a strong opening last weekend, the other releases expected to do well include "Avengers: Endgame", "Toy Story 4", "Frozen 2", "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" and "Star Wars: Episode IX". Cineworld's proforma adjusted EBITDA for the year ended Dec. 31 rose 9.4 percent to $1.07 billion, beating the analyst consensus estimate of $1.04 billion.

Action movies such as "Black Panther" and "Avengers: Infinity War" boosted revenues through to Nov. 11, and European markets saw an uplift in the second half, driven by films including "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again", "Incredibles 2" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" in the UK. Despite the 11.6 percent sales rise however, London-listed Cineworld said it would deliver a performance in line with its current expectations for the year.
U.S. movie theater chains fear that a Justice Department review of little-known mid-century rules may result in studios getting free rein to force them to show unpopular movies in exchange for getting blockbuster releases, threatening their profits. The U.S. Supreme Court in 1948 ruled against the practice, called "block booking," and others that favored studios, leading the plaintiff, Paramount Pictures, Inc, and its peers to sign consent decrees over the next few years with the Justice Department that banned such deals. The agreements regulating relations between movie studios and theaters, which the industry calls the Paramount consent decrees, were reached in the late 1940s and early 1950s when movie theaters had just one screen, televisions were not universal, and online streaming was decades into the future.
