International private companies have increased their investment in Brazil's power sector over the last three years even as the country's cash-strapped state-controlled companies have cut back, a Reuters survey of power companies shows. Eight out of 11 large foreign private firms operating in Brazil boosted investments in the power sector from 2016 to 2018, some of them by more than 200 percent, the poll showed. Meanwhile, the three largest state-controlled firms - Eletrobras , Cemig and Copel - cut their annual spending by around 45 percent over the same period.

China's State Power Investment Corporation is in talks to acquire two additional hydroelectric dams and two thermal plants in Brazil, a person with knowledge of the matter said Thursday. One of the hydroelectric dams is Usina Tres Irmaos, an 800 megawatt dam in Sao Paulo state, controlled by Brazilian infrastructure group Triunfo Participacoes e Investimentos SA (TPIS3.SA) (TPI), the person added, requesting anonymity to discuss private talks. Brazil's Belo Monte hydroelectric dam does not require new capital expenditures and will soon report stable cash flow and pay dividends to shareholders, a director at pension fund Petros said on Tuesday, adding that shareholders are unlikely to sell it in the short term. "A solution for Belo Monte will come when the dam operates at full capacity," Daniel Lima said during an event in the southern city of Florianopolis. Belo Monte is still generating below capacity due to transmission line problems.
