New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced last week that employees of the city’s public hospital system, which included medical centers like Elmhurst Hospital, the epicenter of the first wave of hospitalizations in 2020, would have to show proof of vaccination or submit a weekly test until they got their shot. Exemptions are allowed for religious medical reasons.

De Blasio expanded that order on Monday to all city public employees, which included police officers, firefighters and teachers. Even though 59% of the city’s entire population and 70% of its adult population has at least one dose of the vaccine as of Tuesday, the numbers were lagging among the ranks of some New York agencies, city data showed.

The NYPD had a 43% vaccination rate, the Department of Correction had a 42% vaccination rate, the FDNY had a 55% vaccination rate, and public school employees and city hospital employees each had a 60% vaccination rate, according to data from city officials. Nationally, 56% of all residents and 69% of all adults have at least one shot, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The testing mandate will go into effect for unvaccinated public hospital workers next week, and goes into effect on Sept. 13, the first day of schools in New York, for other public employees.

I am not sure that people understand how big this news should be for Covid testing stocks. Basically, it's going to become required that federal, state employees and many large companies are going to require vaccination or a test that proves you are not a carrier. So for millions of people who will choose not to be vaccinated, they will have to be tested and their employers are going to have to establish the infrastructure for that to happen as part of their employment conditions. If you don't and fire or refuse to pay them, without a testing option, you will be sued. I see this as seismic news...

A few hours later, California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that he would place a similar testing mandate for any state employee who can’t provide proof of vaccination. The mandate affects 249,000 employees and also provides exemptions for religious or medical reasons.

“California has committed to vaccination verification and or testing on a weekly basis,” Newsom said at a news conference.

California’s policy will take effect on Aug. 9.

Mathema said the policy will be most effective at swaying unvaccinated employees who were on the fence about getting the shot and needed an incentive to do so.

In this case, time spent on taking a COVID-19 test, submitting the paperwork to a boss and getting their OK week after week would take its toll, Mathema said.

“There will certainly be some people who find the constant testing inconvenient,” he said.

Dr. John Brownstein, an epidemiologist at Boston Children’s Hospital and an ABC News contributor, said the testing requirement will put extra pressure on an unvaccinated employee to get their shot.

There is a strong sell wall at 9.87. What is the reasoning for expected growth for this vs the already present and global tests available? I'm seriously asking.

more testing will be the norm.

" A Louisiana doctor said the coronavirus was causing an "exponential" surge in hospitalizations.

"This isn't a controllable thing at this point," Dr. Catherine O'Neal told CNN.

The highly transmissible Delta variant is fueling infections in Louisiana and across the country.

See more stories on Insider's business page.

A Louisiana doctor has painted a grim picture of the spread of the coronavirus in the Bayou State, a spread fueled by the highly transmissible Delta variant.

"Right now in the community the spread is exponential, and that exponential spread is because of the Delta variant," the infectious-disease specialist Dr. Catherine O'Neal told CNN.

"That's resulting in just an exponential number of patients coming into the hospital," added O'Neal, the chief medical officer at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, a Baton Rouge facility that has more COVID-19 patients than any other hospital in the state.

O'Neal said that as of Wednesday morning there were 119 COVID-19 patients in the hospital - a 50% increase from last week.

Read more: I was the first American to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. The biggest lesson I learned from the pandemic has nothing to do with my newfound celebrity.

"You don't get your arms around something like this," O'Neal said. "This isn't a controllable thing at this point. This is blocking and tackling. This is every day making a new plan."

She added: "We don't have a game plan for three days from now except that we know that three days from now will be far worse."

"Early in the pandemic," we didn't have enough tests or supplies," Lori Tremmel Freeman, chief executive officer of the National Association of County and City Health Officials, told CNN on Wednesday.
Now, "testing is emerging once again as a really key priority area, especially with the rise in variants coupled with variable vaccination rates," Freeman said. "So, the testing has to come back to the forefront, or we're not going to be able to even understand where and how to target the mitigation efforts community by community."

I believe we may be missing the point , which is INDIA. Their partner was in early and is a major company(?). This leads to huge gross margins as profits only are booked, I believe. Last quarter, India was the epicenter of infection. Could lead to big earnings surprise. Meanwhile, vaccine makers are generating HUGE cash flows. For $600 mm, any company can have some of the best technology to build out. Even Bill Gates is looking in this area, per reports.
