Angry Cathay pilots vote to raise funds as buffer for potential management action

Pilots at Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd voted in favor of raising funds as a buffer against any actions the Hong Kong airline may take against them, such as unilateral benefit changes or job losses, their union said on Friday. The move underscores persistent pilot discontent at Cathay, where anger and distrust has deepened after it decided not to pay any year-end bonuses to Hong Kong-based captains, five pilots told Reuters on condition of anonymity. Eager to trim costs, the loss-making airline had also sought to cut payment of housing allowances but this month extended the stipend ahead of a busy holiday travel period and amid poaching attempts by its rivals.

Cathay Pacific backs down, extends pilot housing allowances for a year

SINGAPORE/HONG KONG (Reuters) - Cathay Pacific Airways has extended payment of housing allowances to its pilots for another year, backing down from a plan to cut the stipend as the busy holiday travel period looms and amid poaching attempts by its rivals. The loss-making Hong Kong airline is undertaking a transformation programme aiming for HK$4 billion in savings over three years, but its plan to cut housing allowances worth up to HK$100,000 ($12,807.38) a month for the most senior pilots had angered its pilot workforce. "There was indeed a risk of industrial action which would have caused flight disruptions that would have a greater financial impact on Cathay during the current peak season," said Corrine Png, the CEO of transport research firm Crucial Perspective, adding it was "challenging to take back these benefits without facing huge resistance".

As Cathay Pacific wields jobs axe, 'Swire prince' culture survives

Loss-making Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd hired McKinsey & Co consultants earlier this year to advise on a transformation plan, drawing on turnarounds at regional rivals such as Qantas Airways Ltd (QAN.AX) and Japan Airlines Co Ltd . Battered by competition from Chinese and Middle East airlines and hobbled by missteps in fuel hedging, Cathay in January completed a strategic review, and later announced its biggest job cuts in almost two decades. Following McKinsey's subsequent input - which has not been previously reported - Greg Hughes, Cathay's Chief Operations and Service Delivery Officer, said more than 740 initiatives had so far been identified to cut costs, boost productivity and improve customer service - including easier access to higher 'frequent flyer' status, more economy-class seats on Boeing (BA.N) 777 airliners, and on-demand dining for business-class fliers.

Chinese airlines court Cathay pilots facing pay squeeze

SHANGHAI/SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Chinese airlines are circling disaffected pilots at Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific Airways , offering sky-high salaries to fill a shortage of experienced captains in a rapidly expanding aviation industry. Chinese carriers, including China Southern Airlines , Hainan Airlines and Juneyao Airlines , will need more than 100,000 new pilots over the next two decades, according to forecasts by planemaker Boeing Co (BA.N), as air travel takes off with increased prosperity in the world's second-largest economy. China trains around 4,700 new pilots a year at home and abroad, according to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), but the industry's sharp growth has left it short of captains with several thousand hours flying experience.

Cathay Pacific's pilots plan levy as buffer against action by airline

Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd's pilots will vote on whether to raise funds as a buffer against any actions the loss-making Hong Kong airline takes against them such as unilateral benefit changes or job losses, according to the pilot's union. Cathay has warned its pilots about intended cuts to their housing allowances and retirement benefits as it attempts to return to profitability after reporting the worst half-year loss in at least 20 years. The Hong Kong Pilot Aircrew Officers' Association (HKAOA), in a notice of a meeting issued to members on Thursday and viewed by Reuters, said it proposing a levy of up to HK$500 ($64) a month that each pilot will pay, depending on rank.

Qatar Airways wants to create a virtual mega-carrier that will benefit from economies of scale in negotiations on fuel and aircraft purchases while it boosts investment in other airlines, its chief executive said on Tuesday. The Qatari carrier announced a $661 million deal on Monday to buy a 9.61 percent stake in Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific Airways to broaden its reach and potentially allow the oneworld alliance member to increase traffic through its Doha hub. Qatar Airways has been unable to fly to the previously lucrative markets of the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia because of an airspace rights dispute, prompting investment elsewhere.

Rebuffed by American Airlines, Qatar Airways buys into Cathay Pacific

DUBAI/SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Qatar Airways has broadened its global reach by purchasing a 9.61 percent stake in Cathay Pacific , adding another strategic investor to the Hong Kong carrier's complicated share register at a time when it is looking to cut costs. Hong Kong's Kingboard Chemical Holdings said it had sold the stake to Qatar Airways for HK$5.16 billion ($661 million), making the Middle Eastern carrier the third-largest shareholder in Cathay. For Cathay, the Qatar stake will give it a third strategic shareholder behind Swire Pacific Ltd and Air China Ltd , potentially complicating a restructuring plan aimed at slashing HK$4 billion in costs over three years.
