Carnival Corp. said Tuesday that it's working to reduce single-use plastic consumption across its nine cruise lines by the end of 2021. The company already has programs in place to lower or eliminate straws, cups, lids, bags and other items. Carnival could also discontinue some individual packaged food items or decorative items in food and beverage service to passenger staterooms. However, Carnival said it's not looking at immediately reducing single-use plastics related to sanitary or public health-related purposes, like sanitary gloves and trash can liners. The effort is part of the Operation Oceans Alive sustainability initiative launched in January 2018, which has already achieved a 25% carbon reduction three years ahead of schedule. Carnival stock has dipped 6.6% for the year to date while the S&P 500 index is up 18.6% for the period.
