    Japanese wireless carrier NTT Docomo, Sony Corp and California-based chip giant Intel Corp pulled out of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona on Monday because of the coronavirus outbreak. Amazon, South Korea's LG Electronics, Swedish equipment maker Ericsson and U.S. chipmaker Nvidia have already withdrawn from MWC, which had more than 100,000 visitors and upwards of 2,400 exhibitors in 2019. MWC, due to take place on Feb 24-27, is the telecom industry's biggest annual gathering, with companies spending millions on stands and hospitality to fill their order books.

    Otter.ai, an AI-powered transcription app and note-takers' best friend, has received a strategic investment from Japan's leading mobile operator and new Otter partner, NTT DOCOMO Inc. The two companies are teaming up to support Otter's expansion into the Japanese market, where DOCOMO will be integrating Otter with its own AI-based translation service subsidiary, Mirai Translation, in order to provide accurate English transcripts, which are then translated into Japanese. The investment was made by DOCOMO's wholly owned subsidiary, NTT DOCOMO Ventures, Inc., but the size was undisclosed. To date, Otter has raised $23 million in funding from NTT DOCOMO Ventures, Fusion Fund, GGV Capital, Draper Dragon Fund, Duke University Innovation Fund, Harris Barton Asset Management, Slow Ventures, Horizons Ventures and others.

    NTT Docomo <9437.T> will resume taking orders of Huawei P30 Pro smartphones from Wednesday, the largest Japanese telco said on its website. Docomo will join the list of other major Japanese carriers - KDDI Corp <9433.T> and SoftBank Corp <9434.T> - and resume sales of new smartphones from China's Huawei Technologies. The Japanese company had discontinued taking orders of new Huawei handsets in May after Washington blacklisted the Chinese manufacturer, alleging that Huawei is involved in activities contrary to U.S. national security or foreign policy interests.
