As of this writing, $5 trillion was wiped from stocks and bonds in October, the S&P 500 fell 7%, the Nasdaq sank 9%, and all gains for the Dow in 2018 were wiped out. To offset any capital gains from winning stocks, some investors may sell their losing investments in order to pay less total tax.
