Italian power giant Enel SpA won a highly contested multibillion-dollar battle for AES Corp.’s Brazilian utility in a move that will more than double its presence in the country’s electricity distribution market. Enel’s 45.22 reais-a-share ($12.14) offer for Eletropaulo SA topped a final one by leading rival Iberdrola SA of Spain in sealed bids opened late Wednesday on the Sao Paulo stock exchange. Enel already has three distribution companies in Rio de Janeiro, Ceara and Goias states, delivering power to millions of clients.
MILAN/MADRID, May 24 (Reuters) - A bitter feud over a Brazilian power grid operator has taken a global rivalry to new levels as Europe's top two utilities ready $1.5 billion-plus bids for Eletropaulo. Brazil's biggest power distributor became one of the world's most prized power assets last month when Italy's Enel and Spain's Iberdrola locked horns in a country both see as key to expansion, virtually doubling its value overnight. Although Enel outdid Iberdrola in an early skirmish with a 32.2 reais per share bid for Eletropaulo, best offers are due on Thursday in a complex bidding process, with sources close to the auction saying there could be room to raise the bar.
Eletropaulo, Brazil's largest power distribution company by revenue, provided details on Monday of the rules for an auction for companies to acquire a controlling stake in the firm. According to a presentation to investors, Eletropaulo Metropolitana Eletricidade de Sao Paulo SA, as the company is formally known, said interested companies would have to deliver their offers to the Sao Paulo's exchange B3 by the end of May 24. Eletropaulo said that it will be possible for another company to present an offer between May 24 and June 4, if that is 5 percent bigger than the largest one standing.
Brazilian development bank BNDES is in talks with four companies interested in acquiring the operation of Viracopos airport, the bank's Chief Executive Officer Dyogo Oliveira said on Tuesday. Viracopos's operator filed for bankruptcy protection on Monday and Oliveira said the bank will try to find a solution before the courts decide on the reorganization. According to the CEO, European and Asian companies are interested in operating the airport.
