Electrolux cuts North America outlook as tariffs force price hikes

Home appliance maker Electrolux cut its full-year forecast for sales growth in North America, its biggest market, after higher U.S. steel tariffs forced it to increase prices for its products. The Swedish company said on Wednesday it expected demand in North America to grow by zero to 2 percent in 2018, lagging its previous forecast of 2-3 percent growth, while it also lowered its outlook for the smaller Latin American and Australian markets. CEO Jonas Samuelson said Electrolux had raised prices in North America by 2 percent after U.S. tariffs inflated prices of locally sourced steel and that it would lift prices further to offset any additional inflation due to the trade conflict.

Electrolux core profit slightly ahead of forecast, cuts market outlooks

Swedish home appliance maker Electrolux's (ELUXb.ST) quarterly operating earnings came in slightly ahead of market forecasts on Wednesday but it downgraded its outlook for demand in North America, its biggest market. The company, whose brands include Electrolux, Frigidaire, AEG and Anova, said it was determined to mitigate higher expenses from raw materials and currency headwinds with price increases and cost reductions. It said it expected demand in North America to grow by zero to 2 percent in 2018, lagging its previous forecast of 2-3 percent growth, while it also lowered its outlook for the smaller Latin American and Australian markets.

White House delays a trade war but intensifies uncertainty

The White House's on-again, off-again tariffs are heightening uncertainty for U.S. companies that buy steel and aluminum and the foreign companies that supply them. Delivering its second reprieve for steel and aluminum imports, the Trump administration late Monday postponed the tariffs that had been set to take effect Tuesday.

Rising raw material costs throw Sweden's Electrolux into a spin

U.S. tariffs helped raise raw material costs at Electrolux (ELUXb.ST), denting first-quarter earnings and sending shares in Europe's largest home appliances maker down 11 percent on Friday. The Swedish maker of brands such as Electrolux, Frigidaire, AEG and Anova has raised its profitability - a key ambition for chief executive Jonas Samuelson - through greater efficiency and cutting lower-margin products. "Prices have come up in the market since our last outlook, partly due to the announcement of trade barriers for steel in the U.S., but also in other commodities like oil," Samuelson said a conference call with investors and analysts.

'Trade wars are good,' Trump says, defying global concern over tariffs

U.S. President Donald Trump struck a defiant tone on Friday, saying trade wars were good and easy to win, after his plan to put tariffs on steel and aluminum imports triggered threats of retaliation from trading partners and a slide in stock markets. The European Union raised the possibility of taking countermeasures, France said the duties would be unacceptable, and China urged Trump to show restraint.

UPDATE 2-Trump slaps steep U.S. tariffs on imported washers, solar panels

WASHINGTON/LOS ANGELES, Jan 22 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump slapped steep tariffs on imported washing machines and solar panels on Monday, giving a boost to Whirlpool Corp and dealing a setback to the renewable energy industry in the first of several potential trade restrictions. The decisions in the two "Section 201" safeguard cases followed findings by the U.S. International Trade Commission that both imported products "are a substantial cause of serious injury to domestic manufacturers," U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said in a statement.
