Argentina's fledgling lithium sector has been torpedoed by the global spread of coronavirus, with operations stalled by a nationwide crackdown and some projects being abandoned as the pandemic has sharpened economic concerns in the country. Argentina is part of South America's so-called "lithium triangle," a major sources of the light metal that is key to the development of electrified vehicles. It has been pushing new projects to catch up with neighboring lithium powerhouse Chile.
As a committed, socially responsible and corporate citizen, Eramet has been working hard for several weeks to combat the spread of the Covid-19 virus by setting up all the necessary preventive measures to protect the health of its employees and their families, as well as through internal support initiatives at every level of the company. This effort has entered a new phase with the creation of a solidarity plan backed by the allocation of an exceptional budget of 1.5 million euros and the redirecting of initiatives to support communities around the mining and metallurgical Group's sites. In all, Eramet will be able to spend around €10 million to fund practical efforts to combat the spread and consequences of the pandemic through health care projects (prevention and support for the health services sector) as well as economic and social support.
Eramet has abandoned plans for an Argentine lithium mine project due to uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 health crisis, the French mining and metallurgy company said on Wednesday. "In the current context of the coronavirus pandemic and considering the many uncertainties that currently weigh on the global economy and our markets, we have decided not to engage the construction of our lithium production plant in Argentina," Eramet chairman and CEO Christel Bories said.
At the time of the Group’s annual results release on 19 February 2020, Eramet announced its lithium development project in Argentina was on hold, since launch requirements had yet to be met. In the current context of the sanitary crisis, which scale and length remain unknown to date, there is considerable uncertainty in the global economy and particularly in raw materials markets, including lithium. To address this situation, Eramet is strengthening and accelerating measures to preserve its cash, in particular by reducing its investments.

Eramet has postponed an Argentine lithium mine project aimed at shifting the group's focus towards electric vehicle minerals, it said, citing economic and regulatory uncertainty in the debt-stricken South American country. The French company had been due to make a final investment decision on the project after giving initial approval last year for plans to start producing lithium from late 2021. "The context in Argentina and the wider economic climate do not allow us at the moment to launch with serenity such a project," Chairman and Chief Executive Christel Bories told reporters after the company reported that it had swung to a net loss in 2019.
