At this year's New York Auto Show, we had the opportunity to talk with the head of Ram Trucks, Jim Morrison, and he had a few interesting tidbits about what's coming and what isn't for the brand. The first big news is that the 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 diesel is finally coming to the all-new Ram 1500 later this year. Up until now, the engine was only available in the previous-generation Ram 1500 and current Ram 1500 Classic.
The Wrangler — and its fanatical owners — helped create the culture of adventure, personalization and durability that define the Jeep brand.
Fiat Chrysler CEO Mike Manley said last year that it was a mistake to pair Maserati with Alfa Romeo because it suggested Maserati was a mass-market brand. The Ghibli, Quattroporte, and GranTurismo Convertible will be on hand, but focus rests on the Levante SUV for the New York Auto Show. One of One ushers Maserati buyers into the same realm of possibilities that BMW's Individual or Porsche Exclusiv does for those German brands, the standard over the gateway reading, "Anything is Possible." Up to now, the GranTurismo - the carmaker's second-oldest offering - has offered the greatest range of customization.
Fiat is celebrating the arrival of spring and drop-top cruising season by offering the blacked-out Urbana Edition treatment on the 124 Spider for the 2019 model year. The move follows the Urbana Edition rebranding — it was formerly called Urbana Trekking — first shown earlier this year on the 500L. It comes with Black Diamond 17-inch aluminum wheels fitted with performance tires, dual exhaust tips, black exterior accents and gloss-black finishes on the A-pillar bar bezel, seat-back pillar and side mirror caps.
In this week's Autoblog Podcast, Editor-in-Chief Greg Migliore is joined by Senior Editor, Green, Jon Beltz Snyder and Assistant Editor Zac Palmer. They do a rundown of the latest news, including rumors of the Toyota Tundra and Tacoma sharing a platform, Jeep's insane Easter Safari concepts and an upcoming "entry level" performance Ford Mustang.
Fiat Chrysler gave an upbeat forecast for 2019 after a tricky end to last year and a slow start to this one, confirming the carmaker was on track to meet its targets and easing fears of a slowdown on the North American market. Speaking at a time when deal talk is bubbling again in the industry, Chairman John Elkann told investors the Italo-American group was ready to play a part in the "new and exciting" era for the auto industry. Chief Executive Michael Manley, who took up his post last July, said the group's operating performance this year would exceed the record results posted in 2018.
The oil lobby is trying to end government aid for the development and production of electric cars as large automotive companies are teaming up to address their emissions problem
The 2019 Jeep Gladiator has one of the coolest features of any truck on the market – a fold-down windshield, just like its Wrangler sibling. We're going to show you just how easy it is to flip it down and do some wind-in-your-teeth offroading – check out the video above for a demonstration.
For the New York Auto Show, Dodge is showing off a new style package for the 2019 Dodge Challenger and Charger that goes by the name Stars and Stripes. As you may have guessed, the new package is military-themed as a salute to American troops. What makes the Stars and Stripes models unique starts with a black and silver center stripe along with black wheels, badging, and American flag fender decals.
General Motors (GM), Ford (F) and Toyota (TM) collaborate with the automotive engineering group, SAE International, to lay down autonomous vehicle safety guiding principles.
"It fits like a glove," Tim Kuniskis, Jeep's head of brand, said in regards to the Dodge Hellcat engine in the Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator, the SUV-maker's new pickup truck. The Jeep Wrangler has had new engines become available in recent years. The latter gives a notable boost to the vehicle's putrid fuel economy, one of the few complaints you'll hear from Wrangler owners.
Shares of Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) have been as volatile as ever. Tesla stock plunged to support, rallied hard into resistance and now finds itself again bouncing off support. And that's just within the last few weeks! The action is concerning to say the least, particularly given the surrounding news flow.Source: Shutterstock Tesla recently announced first-quarter deliveries that came up well short of expectations. However, it doesn't appear to be a demand issue weighing on the name, but rather a logistics one. The automaker began shipping its Model 3 to Europe and China during the quarter and encountered a few hurdles along the way. InvestorPlace - Stock Market News, Stock Advice & Trading TipsThis isn't Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) Tim Cook we're talking about here, and even this supply chain magician may not have been able to navigate these waters without issue. Tesla deserves a little slack here given this task, although it certainly won't help the automaker's financials. * 8 Risky Stocks to Watch as Earnings Season Kicks Off The assumption is that CEO Elon Musk will find (or has found) a solution to the shipping situation and that Q2 deliveries will be much stronger. That said, it doesn't help that Musk has found himself in a showdown with the SEC thanks to the CEO's continued tweeting. Tesla Issues ContinueBut that's not all. Remember that Tesla also had a $920 million convertible debt payment in the quarter. Tesla could not pay with a mix of cash and stock because its share price did not meet the requirements. As a result, the entire payment had to be in cash. Finally, Tesla is reportedly looking at making "hundreds of millions" from Fiat Chrysler (NYSE:FCAU). The latter needs to add vehicles to its fleet in order to avoid emissions fines from the EU. This could set up a win-win for the both companies as Fiat looks to avoid these fines and Tesla could really use the cash. All that said, the recent tone from the analyst community has certainly shifted to a more cautious outlook. Should investors become more cautious too? Let's look at two important charts. Short-Term Chart for Tesla Stock Click to EnlargeThe 50-day moving average and downtrend resistance and working in unison to keep a lid on Tesla stock. Even before the deliveries news, these areas were acting as resistance in the name. That's why investors should have had more caution going into the report. Shares fell from resistance to the cusp of long-term support in just one session. However, TSLA quickly rallied $20 a share off those lows before pulling back some. Now comes the important part, which is why we've been watching Tesla so closely lately: Will Tesla stock again challenge downtrend resistance and the 50-day moving average, or will it retest support? If it pulls back, it's important for bulls to keep TSLA stock price above this $250 to $260 region. While it has temporarily broke at times, it has not closed below this area over the past year. A look below at the long-term chart will show that TSLA has not closed below this area on a weekly basis in more than two years. On the upside, TSLA stock can rally to the 100-day and 200-day moving averages should it get through downtrend resistance. Long-Term Chart for TSLA Stock Click to EnlargeOn the long-term chart, $250 to $260 support is clear as day. After serving as resistance in 2015 and 2016, TSLA stock has now found this area as support for the last few years. Range resistance has since moved up to the $360 to $380 area. However, on the weekly chart the 200-week moving average has presented itself as noteworthy support. While Tesla stock has tended to break below this mark for a few weeks at a time over the years, it eventually recovers this mark and bounces higher. That appears to be the case now too. Or does it? After initially bouncing, TSLA stock hit downtrend resistance (blue line) and the 10-week moving average. Both have been repelling Tesla all year and as a result, shares are now back below the 200-week moving average. If the 200-week becomes resistance, then bulls could be in trouble. This could possibly signal a shift in the stock's long-term trend if that's the case. It will take some time to play out, but these charts are two to keep handy now. Quite simply, the 2019 Ram 1500 is our favorite full-size pickup. From its most basic Tradesman trim to the fanciest Limited and everything in between, we're enamored with its well-rounded, well-executed and generally thoughtful range of talents. It's not offered with the breadth of powertrain offerings as rival trucks, but the eTorque mild hybrid system standard with its V6 and optional with the Hemi V8 at least improves fuel economy and refinement.
The integrated North American auto industry is now threatened by policy shifts for the business of automakers and suppliers on both sides of the border.
Specifically, it's technically possible to slot a Hellcat crate motor into the Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator, as confirmed by Jeep brand chief Tim Kuniskis. Speaking to Australian media last week, Kuniskis went to say that "everybody" keeps asking him if the supercharged, 6.2-liter Hellcat V8 fits in the Wrangler and Gladiator, and that the answer is that it fits.
Fiat Chrysler (NYSE:FCAU) has the name and the history, but there's more to do if FACU stock is going to make any real headway.Source: Shutterstock Last week there were rumors that Fiat had been approached by Peugeot (OTCMKTS:PUGOY) about a tie-up. Also in the discussion is a possible merger with Renault (OTCMKTS:RNLSY) and Nissan (OTCMKTS:NSANY) who are in the middle of their own merger. While the rumors led to a brief lift in FCAU stock, Fiat Chrysler's best solution is to build better cars. Quality is now job one at Chrysler. And it's about time. InvestorPlace - Stock Market News, Stock Advice & Trading TipsThe late Sergio Marchionne did so many things right when it comes to Fiat Chrysler that it's futile to try to poke holes in the man's legacy. The Agnelli family owe him a lifetime of thanks. * 7 High-Risk Stocks With Big Potential Rewards Recently, 80 World Car Awards jurors from 24 countries named Marchionne the World Car Person of the Year , in large part because of his daring move to take two struggling car companies (Fiat, Chrysler) and merge them into one cohesive unit with strong brands like Jeep and Ram. For me, he was and is one of the best CEOs in modern business history. However, except for Ferrari (NYSE:RACE), he never was able to win many quality awards. Now, his successor, Mike Manley, is attempting to end this losing streak. Quality Is Job OneLast October, Manley put 23-year company veteran Mark Champine in charge of Quality for North America. Formerly, Champine was in charge of Electrified Powertrain Programs in North America. While it won't happen overnight, I believe a genuine commitment by Fiat Chrysler to make quality vehicles is the one thing that can raise the FCAU stock price over the long haul. "No, we're not moving fast enough. We need to move faster to get to … our objective, which is to be among the best. That's our mission," Champine told the Detroit Free Press during a meeting at the company's U.S. headquarters in March. Look, if Champine and the rest of the management at FCAU can live up to the company goal to deliver quality vehicles, mergers such as the ones mentioned this past week will become a lot more expensive for the interested parties. Decision TimeAs a current owner of a 2015 Jeep Cherokee and previous owner of several Jeep and Chrysler products, I can honestly say that quality isn't what comes to mind when I think about my ownership experience. Most of the vehicles I've bought were purchased because I liked the way they looked or drove. None were acquired because I thought they were the most reliable vehicle on the road. A financial planner might tell me I'm shortsighted because cars depreciate significantly, but for a lot of people, their vehicle represents who they are (i.e. You don't buy a Dodge Challenger because you care about gas mileage). That said, I wouldn't know that I've ever cursed the day I bought a Fiat Chrysler product despite experiencing moments of frustration. You shouldn't buy a car or truck if you're not prepared for a little time in the shop. I'm in the process of starting my search for a vehicle to replace my Jeep. My wife and I would like to buy a plug-in hybrid. In the most recent federal Canadian budget, the government introduced a proposal that would allow salaried employees who use a car for work to write off the entire cost of the vehicle up to CAD$55,000. Suddenly, Toyota's (NYSE:TM) 2019 RAV 4 Hybrid is looking very attractive for two reasons: Toyota's known for its reliability, it would fit under the $55,000 maximum, and it's ready for sale.Over at Jeep, plug-in versions of the Renegade and Compass should be available in 2020 sometime. Neither of those vehicles is appealing to us. However, the Alfa Romeo Tonale concept vehicle that recently appeared at the Geneva Auto Show is. There's a problem: It probably won't be available until 2021, and Alfa Romeo's got a history for poor quality. The Bottom Line on FCAU StockIf Fiat Chrysler can get its quality ratings higher, not only will FCAU stock move higher, but they'll likely keep me as a customer. But it better move fast because we can't wait past 2021 to replace our vehicle. At the time of this writing Will Ashworth did not hold a position in any of the aforementioned securities. A potential negative story has been rebutted this morning, with China Aircraft Leasing Group denying a newspaper report that it had put an order for 100 737 Max jets on hold. Walt Disney DIS — Cowen upgraded Disney to "outperform" from "market perform," predicting that Thursday's investor day will be a "deck-clearing" event for positive sentiment. Three Wall Street analysts cut their outlook on Tesla Monday, following the electric car company's first-quarter report on electric-vehicle deliveries reported last week that missed views.
The company said it was cutting back production of its 737 Max plane, which has been involved in two fatal crashes in recent weeks. The airline was among those affected by the grounding of Boeing's 737 Max fleet. General Electric Co., down 52 cents to $9.49.
The body-color bedliner of the Jeep J6 concept pickup caught our attention here at Autoblog, and there's some definite dissension in the office as to whether it's a good or bad idea. Some of us (bah humbug!) think that a bedliner should be a traditional shade of black as it always has been. Jeep wouldn't say if this body-color bedliner would ever actually be used in production (you can find this treatment aftermarket already).
