Technical Assessment: Bullish in the Intermediate-TermAs of Wednesday's close, the S&P 500 was 4.1% below its closing high from November 18. Considering the volatility, things could be worse. The Nasdaq has dipped 5% from its closing high on 11/19, while the Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) has dropped 4.2% over the past seven days. The smaller stocks have felt the real pain -- and those declines started back on November 9. The Russell 2000 (IWM) has cascaded 12.1% on a closing basis in 16 days, while the S&P MidCap 400 has given up 8.5% over the past 10 days. Breakouts for both indices to all-time highs in late October/early November have failed miserably.
