    Average long-term US mortgage rose again this week to highest level since mid December

    The average long-term U.S. mortgage rate rose this week for the third time in as many weeks, driving up home loan borrowing costs in just as the spring homebuying season ramps up. The average rate on a 30-year mortgage rose to 6.90% from 6.77% last week, mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said Thursday. A year ago it averaged 5.76%, Freddie Mac said.


    Mortgage Rates Close In on 7% Again. That Could Stifle Home Buying Season.

    Mortgage rates climbed this week to the highest level since mid-December. The average 30-year fixed mortgage rate was 6.9% as of Thursday, Freddie Mac said—up 0.13 percentage point from last week, and the highest weekly rate since the week of Dec. 14. Mortgage rates so far this year have risen about 0.3 percentage point, spurred higher in recent weeks by hotter-than-expected inflation and economic data.
