Phoenix from the ashes: Investors pile into smaller European oil groups

Investors have sent shares in European oil exploration and production (E&P) focussed companies like Premier (PMO.L), Tullow (TLW.L), EnQuest (ENQ.L) and Faroe (FPM.L), soaring, and some fund managers say they have not peaked yet. Shares in smaller and mid-cap British oil companies are outperforming the London FTSE blue chip index (.FTSE) and their larger competitors (.SXEP), riding the wave of rising oil prices (LCOc1) much higher than oil majors. "The sector has performed quite well, but not as well as it might have done, we've only just started the rally," said Paul Mumford, senior fund manager at Cavendish Asset Management, who is invested in Faroe, EnQuest, Tullow, Hurricane Energy (HUR.L) and Cairn Energy (CNE.L) and other smaller E&P groups.

Norwegian oil firm DNO (DNO.OL) has again increased its stake in Britain's Faroe Petroleum (FPM.L), it said on Thursday, boosting its holding to 27.7 percent the day after it bought its first shares. DNO on Wednesday purchased 25.4 percent of Faroe, adding it would become a long-term strategic owner while insisting it did not plan a full takeover. DNO returned to the North Sea last year after years of expansion in the Middle East, with the aim of growing via acquisitions and other investments.

Norway's DNO raises Faroe Petroleum stake to 25.4 percent

Norwegian oil firm DNO (DNO.OL) increased its stake in Faroe Petroleum (FPM.L) to 25.4 percent on Wednesday, after announcing earlier in the day that it had bought a 15.4 percent holding in the British company. DNO bought the initial stake from Israel's Delek Group (DLEKG.TA) and said after the market close that it would offer to buy up to 10 percent of Faroe's shares from other shareholders, although it does not plan a full takeover. "DNO now has decided to build a long-term strategic shareholding in Faroe Petroleum and to support Faroe Petroleum management's growth-focused North Sea strategy," it said.
