FTSE rebounds as earnings in focus, GKN tumbles

The UK's top share index shrugged off weakness from oil stocks on Thursday as a handful of earnings updates were in focus, though GKN (GKN.L) plunged on uncertainty following the ditching of its CEO designate. The FTSE was up 0.2 percent at 7,386.94 points at its close, with gains in the healthcare and consumer sectors offsetting weaker commodity stocks. Oil stocks were among the top fallers on the FTSE, hit after Reuters reported that Norway's trillion-dollar wealth fund proposed to drop oil and gas companies from its benchmark index.

GKN ditches CEO designate after new writedown

The man appointed just two months ago to run British engineer GKN (GKN.L), Kevin Cummings, is leaving after the aerospace division he ran took a second large writedown, sending the shares down by almost 10 percent. Employing 58,000 people across 30 countries in aerospace and automotive engineering, 258-year-old GKN is now without a permanent chief executive at a time when speculation is re-emerging as to whether the group should split itself in two. "After such upheaval, it is not clear what the next stage in GKN's development will be, but it could be profound change," analysts at Jefferies said.

UK's Pendragon warns on profit as new car demand falls

Shares in British car dealership Pendragon tumbled as much as 23 percent on Monday after it warned on full-year profit, blaming a fall in demand for new cars and a consequent price correction in the used car market. Pendragon, which trades as Evans Halshaw and Stratstone in Britain, said it expected the new car market to continue to decline this year and the first half of 2018 as manufacturers continued to adjust to the reduced level of demand. Earlier this month, industry data showed British new car registrations fell 9.3 percent in September, making it highly likely that sales this year will be down for the first time since 2011.

GKN shares slump after 'blow to the head' profit warning

GKN (GKN.L) warned on its year profit on Friday citing disappointing aerospace trading and two external claims that were expected to cost $53 million, hammering shares in the British engineering company. Chief Executive Nigel Stein, who steps down at the end of the year, said the surprise claims and a failure to make productivity improvements in its North American aerospace business were "very disappointing" after 16 years of delivering on expectations. GKN, which dates back to 1759 and employs 58,000 people across 30 countries, now expects its full-year pretax profit to be "slightly above" the 678 million pounds recorded in 2016.
