Hawaiian Electric has donated $10,000 to The Outdoor Circle, a nonprofit that has paired with Google to take 360-degree images of the Island and display them on Google Maps by this fall. Through Google Trekker, a 50-pound backpack outfitted with a 15-camera system that collects panoramic imagery every 2.5 seconds to create a virtual tour, the Honolulu-based organization will feature locations on the Big Island, Oahu, Maui and Kauai along with the potential additions of Molokai and Lānai at a later date. Previously, Google has partnered with the Hawaii Visitors and Conventions Bureau to photograph hard-to-reach places across the Hawaiian Islands, which were released on the company’s Google Maps Street View feature in 2014.
