An Indian court has directed consumer goods maker Emami Ltd to give bigger rival Hindustan Unilever Ltd seven days notice before initiating legal proceedings over the 'Glow & Handsome' trademark, according to a July 6 order. The Indian arm of global consumer giant Unilever said on July 2 it would rebrand its skin-lightening cream 'Fair & Lovely' to 'Glow & Lovely'. The company said its skin cream for men will be called 'Glow & Handsome', but Emami said it had launched 'Glow & Handsome’ digitally one week before HUL announced the name change.
Unilever is considering marketing changes to its dominant line of skin lightening creams, according to a company source in South Asia, even as the company and its rivals face a growing global social media backlash against such products. Products marketed as skin lightening have a huge market in South Asia, due to a societal obsession with fairer skin tones. Unilever's 'Fair & Lovely' brand dominates the market in South Asia, while similar products are sold by L'Oréal and Procter & Gamble.
Indian truck driver Arju Yadav says he was on a 30-40 km (20-25 mile) journey earlier this month to deliver a consignment of biscuits when he was stopped by police for defying a coronavirus lockdown, beaten and made to do sit-ups. India had exempted truckers carrying food, medicine and other essential items from the nationwide lockdown that started on March 25, but in many cases, the message had not gone through to police on the highways and officials at state border checkpoints. For the trucks that do operate, loading and unloading times have spiked because of a lack of workers.
