  • Some nuggets from a recent review of Harmonic by a former-employee:

The CEO has been here for over 10 years, with dismal financial
returns. Most of the board members seem to have been handpicked
by him, so they basically act as a rubber-stamp for the upper management.

Whenever the company's revenues (publicly available as this is a
publicly listed company) dip below US$100 million a quarter, the
CEO goes ahead and buys another smaller competitor to display
increased revenues every quarter (until the revenues go down again
next time). This leads to a year of turmoil every few years (say every
3-4 years) as the new company is integrated and some people are
let go. I saw them buy Omneon in 2010, sell off the fiber-optic
access products division in 2013 and then buy Thomson in 2016.
By the way, there is a lot of product overlap with Thomson, and the
acquisition doesn't make much sense, but other companies were
buying each other out, so Harmonic went ahead and did the same.

There is an employee stock ownership program, but the stock
price never rises above US$5 to US$6... If the stock prices increases
beyond US$6, upper management promptly sell shares to profit.
And oh ya, the upper management get free shares all the time as
compensation, but I guess that's common in the industry.

  • So after many months of search, the only one that Harmonic could find for the CFO position (replacing Covert) is an insider. This begs the question: if this insider is so good why did Harmonic appoint Covert, an aging director of Harmonic, to the position of CFO to start with?
"SAN JOSE, Calif., June 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Harmonic Inc. (HLIT), the worldwide leader in video delivery infrastructure, today announced Sanjay Kalra, corporate controller and chief accounting officer, is appointed to the position of chief financial officer. As previously announced, former chief financial officer Harold Covert has resigned to spend more time with his family on the East Coast."

  • Yahoo has a one year target of $6. Pathetic. It was trading higher 20 years ago.
  • Yahoo will not let me copy and paste this, but check out all the zero cost options and sales management had in May. FOR WHAT? Why do they keep rewarded these guys for total non-performance? Isn't anyone watching the chicken coup? Unbelievable.
  • Another worthless press release to justify their jobs. A world-wide leader my A%#.............
  • tick tock, tick tock, and Harshman keeps collecting a fat pay check. Incredible. The guy must be untouchable.
  • At least one man is getting filthy rich from this disaster of a stock. Can you guess who it is? "It's reprehensible when management prospers and shareholders suffer". Warren Buffett.
  • Zacks' opinion:

"What Makes Harmonic (HLIT) a Strong Sell?

    ....
One stock that you may want to consider dropping is Harmonic Inc. HLIT, which has witnessed a significant price decline in the past four weeks, and it has seen negative earnings estimate revisions for the current quarter and the current year. A Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell) further confirms weakness in HLIT.

A key reason for this move has been the negative trend in earnings estimate revisions. For the full year, we have seen 4 estimates moving down in the past 30 days, compared with no upward revisions. This trend has caused the consensus estimate to trend lower, going from earnings of 6 cents a share a month ago to its current level of a loss of 6 cents.

Also, for the current quarter, Harmonic has seen 4 downward estimate revisions versus no revisions in the opposite direction, dragging the consensus estimate down to a loss of 6 cents a share from a loss of 3 cents over the past 30 days."

Of course one might claim that the investors should look ahead, a year or two hence, and disregard the current analysts' downgrades. However, as history has shown, what really makes Harmonic a poor investment can be answered in one word - Harshman!
  • Netols Asset Management Inc. acquired a new position in shares of Harmonic Inc (NASDAQ:HLIT) during the first quarter, according to its most recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The institutional investor acquired 790,901 shares of the communications equipment provider’s stock, valued at approximately $4,706,000. Netols Asset Management Inc. owned about 0.98% of Harmonic at the end of the most recent quarter.
  • Just saw on TV that 10 years ago, the ratio of CEO salary to the average worker salary was 30 to 1. Today it's 135 to 1. Harshman has helped increase that ratio. Is Harshman worth 135 times the average HLIT employee? That's a real hard question to answer. Let me think about it awhile.....
  • I see where they increased Harshman's salary to $714K this year. Also gave him another 50,000 zero cost options for free stock. He's getting filthy rich and shareholders continue to suffer, suffer and suffer. Someone should investigate what is going on here. It's criminal.
  • Employee review on the Glassdoor.

    May 14, 2017

"Insecure management, mostly untalented staff, not innovative

Current Employee - Anonymous Employee in San Jose, CA.
Has been working at Harmonic full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros:
Decent salary and a paved parking lot

    Cons:
The least innovative company, culture, technology and worst cafeteria food

    Advice to Management:
Get your act together or retire
  • Ford board to press CEO Mark Fields on strategy. That is what the board of directors is suppose to do. Directors at Hlit must be replaced along with Harshman. So glad to hear about class action suit. So tired of hearing upbeat conference calls and all the meaningless pr.
