Mali's new mining code sets "stability period" at 20 years

Under a new mining code, companies operating in Mali will be protected from fiscal changes for 20 years, down from the previous "stability period" of 30 years, the mines minister said late on Thursday. Mali had previously proposed a 10-year stability period. "We have to consider that the research phase can take at least seven, eight or nine years," said Mines Minister Lelenta Hawa Baba Bah.

Denning News Shouldn't Detract From American Funds

A BBC News story posted online on Oct. 21, 2019, has dispelled much, though not all, of the mystery surrounding Mark Denning's departure from Capital Group. The veteran American Funds investor had left parent company Capital Group about six weeks prior on Sept. 9 for what the firm would only describe at the time as a “personnel decision.” As it turns out, conflicts of interest were at the heart of the matter. The BBC discovered that Denning, while a portfolio manager on American Funds SMALLCAP World SMCWX , had invested that strategy's money for years into Hummingbird Resources, even as his adult daughter became engaged and married to Hummingbird Resources' CEO Daniel Betts.

Mali's new mining code ends tax exemptions, other protections

Mining companies operating in Mali will no longer be exempt from VAT during production and will have a shorter period of protection from fiscal changes, according to a new mining code announced by the Mines Ministry on Wednesday. The new code seeks to redress the "shortcomings" of a 2012 law by bringing a "substantial increase" in the contribution of the mining sector to the economy, the Mines Ministry said in a statement. The new code in Mali, Africa's third largest gold producer, shortens the "stability period" during which mining companies' existing investments are protected from changes to fiscal and customs regimes.
