European chip industry seeks more EU help to extend revival

Europe's semiconductor industry is requesting more help from the European Union as it seeks to build on a tentative revival, embrace technologies such as artificial intelligence and ride out trade wars that threaten global supply chains. A 20-page report submitted to Mariya Gabriel, the EU digital affairs commissioner, requests that a research and development programme launched in 2014 be doubled to 10 billion euros ($11.7 billion) in the bloc's next seven-year budget period.

Infineon targets at least 10 percent revenue growth in 2019

German chip maker Infineon Technologies gave bullish guidance for fiscal 2019 on Friday, saying it expected revenue growth to accelerate to at least 10 percent thanks to a strong order book and a strengthening U.S. dollar. Munich-based Infineon already nudged up its revenue guidance for fiscal 2018 last month, forecasting an increase of 4 to 7 percent after second-quarter earnings topped expectations thanks to demand from automotive and industrial customers. It said on Friday it was stepping up its spending plans to keep up with growth, raising the proportion of annual revenues it intends to invest on average to 15 percent from 13 percent and saying it would temporarily exceed that ratio due to further one-off investments.

Staying close to home, Infineon to build new chip plant in Austria

Germany's Infineon Technologies (IFXGn.DE) plans to build a 1.6 billion euro (1.4 billion pound) chip facility in Austria, in a major strategic bet on Europe at a time of growing trade and political uncertainty in Asia. The plant will become the firm's second facility after one in the east German city of Dresden that can make power chips on 300 millimetre-diameter wafers - a large, thin, format where Infineon claims a technology and cost lead over its competitors. The investment is a coup for Chancellor Sebastian Kurz's right-wing coalition government, with Infineon preferring Austria to its other foreign base in Malaysia, which has just seen a dramatic election upset.
