Retailers continue to dominate S&P Global Ratings’ global tally of the most vulnerable companies, but companies in the media and entertainment sector are comprising an ever-larger percentage of the count. Based on the number of weakest links in last month’s count, the consumer products sector has the highest potential for defaults, with 37 weakest links as of June 18, followed by the media and entertainment sector with 27 and the restaurants sector with 23. Inc. are two of the high-profile media companies that have filed for bankruptcy in recent months, but last month’s additions to the weakest links list show that distress in the sector extends well beyond the marquee names.
Inc.’s unsecured creditors committee has sued a group of banks and bond trustees, challenging the status of $13 billion in senior debt. Senior creditors are in line to walk away with the lion’s share of the equity and debt in iHeartMedia. The unsecured creditors are seeking to strip liens securing certain senior term loans and bonds and to reverse a series of debt swaps the company carried out before it filed for bankruptcy.

Inc. opposes a plan to pay almost $17 million in bonuses to executives, saying the goals to earn the incentives aren’t challenging enough. Henry Hobbs Jr., an acting U.S. trustee, told the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Houston last Thursday that the incentive plan shouldn’t be approved, saying iHeartMedia has “not demonstrated that the performance goals represent challenging” benchmarks. The San Antonio-based radio station operator wants the court’s permission to pay bonuses of about $16.6 million for the rest of 2018 to 11 senior executives, including the chief executive officer, president and general counsel, if certain targets are met.
The payments surfaced in reports iHeart is required to file with the Houston bankruptcy court where it sought protection from creditors in March with $16 billion in debt. The name-dropping stopped when it came to the detailed reports iHeart is required to file as part of its chapter 11 proceeding.
