Extract from a Bloomberg report dated 23 Feb 21…Shares of Coherent (COHR) fell on Tuesday after a report said the laser technology maker has asked MKS Instruments and II-VI Inc. to submit final bids by late next week.

Those two are competing with Lumentum (LITE) which last month agreed to buy Coherent for about $5.7 billion.

Coherent's board still recommends the Lumentum deal but has said it's engaging with the other offers.

Coherent's plans aren't final and could still change, and there's no guarantee that MKS or II-VI will submit new offers, Bloomberg reported.

The new product press releases have just been flying out of IIVI lately. Their labs must be super busy developing all these new products.

In many regards COHR is a better fit with IIVI than with LITE and MKS. IIVI is extremely strong in basic laser components along with some integrated components, while COHR is extremely strong in integrated components (complete lasers and some more highly integrated devices). With respect to MKS and LITE, a COHR acquisition is primarily a broadening of their portfolios rather than developing a more holistic company as would be the case with IIVI. However, the price that IIVI is offering, in my view, is somewhat excessive. We shall see what happens next . . .

What do you think will happen if the $COHR acquisition fails? Will the price crash? Go up? Sideways? What would be the rationale ?

Mentioned a few times today on CNBC's halftime report by Weiss.

Basically said you can't have lidar, etc without their products.

    Guessing 15 minutes in?

It was also mentioned briefly at beginning of the show too.

If anyone cares I'm sure they can find the video.

I had sold all shares as they seemed to lose their way for many years. Fran was not good for share price, even though he had been hand picked by Carl.

I used to have a ton of shares and a CB as low as 2.00(after splits). Used to attend the annual meetings until they started playing games with them.

I bought a little last week and a few March calls the day before the ER.

So out of touch with a lot of current products for phones, lidar, etc. So just a little position for now.

Noted private investment firm Bain Capital is keen to invest in the combined company.
Wellington and Blackrock are the two largest shareholders of both companies.
This would be a win for shareholders.

I hate when people are so short sighted and in this era that we are growing new markets in exponential way, they just look at the current PE to evaluate or diss a company. so this is my answer:

In one year when EV charging start rolling in, the SiC sale alone will bring up this PE to less than 10. look at the CAGR. Not considering: 1)Lidar, 2)datacom, 3)laser pump, 4) battery welding lasers. These all are the things which II-VI have ready and will pay back in tens of billions in the next ten years.

brand new to this stock - just purchased 100 shares in the mid-90s. liked everything I saw about the stock, such as near 100% institutional ownership, top notch institutional funds, etc, hot product space, nice IBD rankings etc. But I also notice it has had a huge run after a long holding pattern, which generally suggests it should run more - any thoughts about the ability of management to drive this stock further? buy more? I notice many of you have been long term holders and are very familiar the space.

looks to me like iivi generated a lot of cash last quarter and will continue to generate cash in next few quarters - probably from the Sherman fab. Looks like that fab has ramped with good yields and they are taking share from other apple suppliers. So with good yields, plenty of capacity and generating strong cash flow what do you do? Sit on the cash during a time when optics and lasers are coming into mainstream use?
