Aerospace ETF poised for best day in more than 2 weeks as Boeing's stock pops 2%

The exchange-traded iShares U.S. Aerospace & Defense ETF was up more than 1% early Monday, putting the fund on pace for its best day since Dec. 6, as shares of Boeing jumped following news that its CEO was resigning. Boeing Co. represents 20.4% of the Aerospace & Defense ETF, with shares of the aviation-and-defense company rising after it said CEO Dennis Muilenburg was resigning effective immediately and would eventually be replaced by David L. Calhoun CEO on a long-term basis, amid the grounding of the company's 737 MAX jetliner. The iShares ETF is a market-cap weighted fund kicked off in 2006 and has been under pressure this month as developments related to Boeing have weighed. The ETF is on track to post three straight gains but is down 2.4% so far in December, according to FactSet data. Boeing on Monday was the best performer among its more than 30 constituents.

Boeing 737 News Lifts Aerospace ETFs

Shares of Boeing climbed nearly 4% in early afternoon trading, adding more than 94 points to the Dow Jones Industrial Average, after the aerospace company announced on Monday that it expects to resume deliveries of its grounded 737 Max planes as early as next month and that airlines could be able to restart commercial service in January. Boeing’s 737 Max planes have been grounded and under heavy scrutiny since mid-March, after deadly crashes killed almost 350 people in Ethiopia and Indonesia over a five-month time frame. “While the assumption reflects Boeing’s best estimate at this time, the actual timing of return to service will be determined by the FAA and other global aviation regulatory authorities and could differ from this assumption and estimate,” Boeing spokesman Paul Bergman told Reuters over the summer.
