Worst week in five months for FTSE 100 as EM goes south

Britain's top share index failed to rebound convincingly on Friday at the end of a turbulent week for markets during which an economic crisis in Turkey spread anxiety across global financials and mining stocks. The blue-chip FTSE 100 ended the day flat at 7,558.59 points, near a four-month low, and sealed its worst weekly loss in five months with a 1.4 percent decline. Recent market turmoil over a currency crisis in Turkey and uncertainty over global trade have dented risk appetite and hit stocks in more cyclical sectors.

European shares recover, Atlantia drags Italian stocks lower

European shares recovered on Thursday after Beijing said it would hold trade talks with the United States this month, spurring risk appetite, although Italian shares fell sharply as Atlantia sank. Europe's STOXX 600 (.STOXX) closed up 0.5 percent, clawing back some of Wednesday's losses which had taken it to a six-week low as emerging markets entered bear territory. Italy's FTSE MIB (.FTMIB) fell 1.5 percent to its lowest level since April 2017 as shares in motorway operator Atlantia (ATL.MI) plunged 25 percent.

Kaz Minerals copper miner declares dividend, H1 earnings rise

Copper miner Kaz Minerals (KAZ.L) on Thursday announced an interim dividend of 6 U.S. cents per share, the first in six years, and said it expected to make a similar payment for the second half as it boosted output and kept costs low. Its share price rose around 7 percent by 0851 GMT, partly reversing deep slides this month and outperforming the broader market , which gained 1.4 percent. Kaz Minerals shares were particularly hard hit after the Kazakhstan-focused miner said at the start of this month it was expanding into Russia with a deal to buy a copper project in Baimskaya from a group of investors including Chelsea soccer club owner Roman Abramovich.

Tariff threats and earnings disappointments dent European shares

A selloff in European shares extended on Thursday with Germany's DAX taking the brunt of anxieties over trade tensions, while results from industrial group Siemens disappointed but Europe's biggest asset manager, Amundi, impressed the market. The pan-European STOXX 600 fell 0.8 percent to a one-week low as investors sold risky assets on President Donald Trump's threat to increase U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports. Germany's top index, the most sensitive to trade, dropped 1.5 percent as heavyweights like Siemens tumbled.

FTSE slides to one-month low, Rolls-Royce powers ahead

Britain's top share index slid on Thursday, touching a one-week low as shares in heavyweight cyclicals dropped, though Rolls-Royce was a standout gainer after its results. The blue chip FTSE 100 index ended the session down 1 percent at 7,575.93 points, accelerating losses after the Bank of England raised interest rates as expected. A weaker pound failed to lift the FTSE as the currency came under pressure after Governor Mark Carney said that policy needed to "walk not run" and expressed concern over Brexit.

Kaz Minerals buys Russian copper from group including Abramovich, shares slide

LONDON/MOSCOW (Reuters) - Kaz Minerals shares plunged after it said it was expanding into Russia with a deal to buy a copper project in Baimskaya for $900 million (£689.4 million) from a group of investors including Chelsea soccer club owner Roman Abramovich. Miners are especially keen for new copper mines to meet demand for the conductor used in electric vehicles and grids, but many have ruled out Russia as too politically complicated. Baimskaya was one of the world's most significant undeveloped copper prospects and the deal was part of the transformation of the firm, Kaz Minerals, which until now has focused on low-cost copper production in Kazakhstan, said on Thursday.
