San Diego-based Kratos Defense & Security Solutions is a small defense firm that hopes to make it big in drones. Robot vacuum seller iRobot (IRBT) has fallen to 70 bucks from about $100 last year, when Axler warned of impending competition. Since 2012, nine chief executives have departed following Axler’s critical reports.
A local manufacturer has won another large contract to build remote-controlled, high-speed drones for the military to use for target practice. Earlier this month, the Unmanned Systems Division of Kratos Defense & Security Solutions Inc. was awarded a $24.3 million contract from the U.S. Navy. Another Kratos (KTOS) division, Roseville-based Composite Engineering Inc., was awarded a separate $93 million contract to supply similar systems to the U.S. Army in January.
