Canada expands steel, aluminum tariff exemptions

Canada said on Wednesday it will exclude some imported steel and aluminum from its newest import tariffs and quotas following a request from the construction industry in British Columbia, which depends on imported metal. The government also said it would give additional relief to some companies that have contractual obligations. In Canada, automakers frequently buy U.S. steel under contract, import and distribute it to their Canadian suppliers as well as their own plants, but it was not immediately clear which companies would be affected.

Canada blindsided by GM closure, workers walk out in protest

TORONTO/MONTREAL (Reuters) - Hundreds of workers walked off the job and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed "deep disappointment" after General Motors Co (GM.N) on Monday announced the closure of its Oshawa plant, catching governments and employees by surprise. Canadian officials, briefed on the plan on Sunday, promised to aid those affected by the December 2019 closure, part of a wider restructuring that will cut production of slow-selling models and slash GM's North American workforce. GM said the closure affects 2,973 assemblyline jobs in the Ontario city, out of the automaker's Canadian workforce of 8,150.

Canada tariff exemptions offer auto industry relief

Canada has excluded a long list of steel and some aluminium products from its 25 percent tariff on U.S. metal, offering short-term relief to the country's auto sector, which relies heavily on U.S.-made steel. The exemptions, which reduce vehicle and parts manufacturers' costs, show the Canadian government is willing to protect autos, a key export industry, even when that benefits U.S. steelmakers in the midst of a trade war. On Thursday, the Canadian government published two lists of mostly steel products newly exempt from tariffs because of shortages, after companies sought relief.

Canada Auto Suppliers Surge With Trade Deal Removing Tariff Threat

Canada’s eleventh-hour inclusion in a new North America free-trade deal removes a major overhang for auto suppliers but doesn’t fix many of the competitive issues that have restricted investment in the Canadian auto industry. The new U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA, removes the threat of damaging auto tariffs and requires that 75 percent of vehicle content be made in North America, up from 62.5 percent currently. This marks the first trade deal between major auto producing nations since the original 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement that will see regional vehicle content increase, said Flavio Volpe, president of Canada’s Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association.

Linamar sees higher metals costs as 'opportunistic' U.S. companies hike prices

Canadian manufacturing firm Linamar Corp (LNR.TO) is dealing with higher metals costs as some "opportunistic" American companies take advantage of U.S. steel tariffs on their foreign rivals to raise prices, chief executive Linda Hasenfratz said on Tuesday. In June, the U.S. Commerce Department said it was investigating recent steel price hikes to determine whether some market participants were "illegitimately profiteering" from 25 percent tariffs introduced by President Donald Trump's administration on steel imports. "People are being opportunistic," Hasenfratz told analysts after Linamar, which makes auto parts and aerial work platforms, among other products, reported quarterly earnings.
