LG Display says beefs up Google tie-up, but denies got $930 million investment

South Korea's LG Display said on Tuesday it is beefing up a strategic alliance with Alphabet Inc's Google for stable panel supplies and new product development. In a filing to the stock exchange, LG Display also denied media reports that the flat-screen maker has received direct investment worth 1 trillion won ($929.15 million) from the U.S. technology giant. The company said in a previous filing in November that no details of any investment by Google had been finalised, following a report in South Korea's Electronic Times that Google has offered to invest at least 1 trillion won to help LG Display boost output of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screens for smartphones.

South Korea's LG Display looks up after posting first loss in six years

South Korea's LG Display Co Ltd forecast higher panel shipments and more stable prices in the second quarter as it reported its first operating loss in six years on Wednesday, hit by a flood of supply from Chinese rivals. Sluggish sales of liquid crystal displays for TVs and investment costs of shifting production to meet growing demand for organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels also weighed on earnings in the first quarter. LCD panel prices should stabilise while demand for large-size OLED panels was also expected to remain strong, he added.

    Tech’s Structural Change

LG Display Co.’s first operating loss in six years came amid a decline in panel prices. Deficits at the operating and income levels weren’t a complete surprise -- analysts had been trimming their forecasts over the past few weeks and were starting to predict a loss at the South Korean firm. In the first quarter of this year, prices touched $522, but LG Display posted a 98 billion won operating loss.

LG Display books first operating loss in 6 years as panel prices drop

South Korea's LG Display Co Ltd reported its first operating loss in six years, hit by a sharp drop in panel prices as Chinese rivals flooded the market and sluggish sales of liquid crystal displays for TVs. "The market situation has changed more rapidly than expected," Don Kim, CFO of LG Display, said in a statement. Chinese panel makers, bolstered by government subsidies, have ramped up production and caused panel prices to drop even further, analysts have said.

The Apple Inc. Foray Into MicroLED Is More Bark Than Bite

Once again, unconfirmed (though credible) rumors about Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) working on a cutting-edge technology has made for splashy headlines. The iPhone maker is working on the in-house development of its own MicroLED screens, which are superior to the commonly used LED screens that are popular and affordable. A reason to buy Apple stock if you don’t own it already?

Apple Inc. (AAPL) MicroLED Secret Is Out: Are Display Makers in Danger?

It seems Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is making an earnest effort to become self-dependent in designing the key components for its products. The tech behemoth has already started manufacturing a small number of screens starting with its Apple Watch. Naturally, this development is a serious concern for a number of suppliers such as screen makers Samsung Electronics (OTCMKTS:SSNLF), LG Display Co Ltd. (NYSE:LPL) and Sharp Corporation (OTCMKTS:SHCAY), and chip-screen interface producers like Synaptics, Incorporated (NASDAQ:SYNA), as it could hurt their market share in the long term.

MicroLED is a new display technology that has grabbed the attention of several tech firms. The new technology is however unproven and difficult to use, analysts say.
